So I let my gf borrow my powerbook and she scratched the top lid pretty bad, i'll post pics later. It wasn't really her fault though I think it was her keys that she left in the bag. The most ironic thing is that in 2 days I'm going to be getting my willow bag. So now here's the big ques there are prolly tons of other posts on this but I'm too traumatized to look, ANYBODY know if it can be replaced? buffed out? can anything be done????? multiple scratches some about 2mm deep.

Sorry to read so bad news for your powerbook. Unfortunately, I am not aware of possible repair, except the well known and very expensive one.

No, no, no. First crush 3000$ out of her and then dump her.

No seriously, sorry to hear that. Didn't she know that the keys would scratch the surface...?

It wasn't her fault??? I'd say if she left her metal keys in the same bag as the Powerbook, it is her fault. Unless the keys crawled in the bag by themselves.

Yikes man...sadly, 2mm deep scratches aren't repairable by anything other than replacing your PowerBook, or at least it's lid/screen.

That's a terrible misfortune...sorry to hear that man. Be nice to your g/f though.

Oh man... That's terrible! I'd have a hard time holding back on my girlfriend. It wasn't malicious, so... Jeez, be strong man, be strong.

Actually it is really not her fault. You broke the cardinal rule of every Powerbook user. You loaned out your Powerbook. What in the world were you thinking? That you could actually TRUST a Girlfriend? I could not trust my own Mother with my 17"...or the President for that matter. Don't even talk about the Apple repair dept...

I guess love really is blind. Too bad you found out it is also not scratch resistant...

So sad...

Guess you can find a nice decal to cover the scratch at least...

I would use this as an opportunity to guilt trip the **** out of her and make perform services for you at your command.. ;-)

and then make her replace the PB.

it's a battle of principle.... does GF=PB, or PB>GF, or GF>PB???

Really sorry to hear about the machine... it sucks big time.

But I guess it is just a computer after all... and I mean, it could have been a lot worse... your G/F wasn't to know and she probably feels bad enough about it already...

I vote for cutting some slack...

Peace,

Marc

think of it like a guitar case...the scratches show you have A LIFE...

the difference between the guitarist who sits at home & dreams of travelling in a band...and the one who's out there, doing it all.

u have a powerbook, a girlfriend...dude, you're already way ahead of a lot of people!

I've just noticed a scratch on my PB too. ARGH! But almost looks like a crack in the paint - just got back from Tunis where is damn hot - could that cause it?

Onto the actual topic:

Its not really her fault, as she is a girl, and it is a piece of technology. Therefore one of them was bound to break. Unfortunately for you, it was the PB, as girlfriends are easier to fix - chocolate!

i don't even let mey girlfriend get near it... she might get those PC laptops germs on my powerbook... I'm thinking of drawing a line on the carpet as a border for my Powerbook Zone... no one but me may enter the Powerbook Zone at any time. Violators will be put out on the street as soon as I close the lid of the powerbook.

Don't be so materialistic. Your Powerbook is replaceable, whereas your girlfriend isn't. We'll all die one day anyway and little scratches won't matter, so enjoy your life while you can.

I wouldn't even trust Mr. Bush with an iPod
I would trust 'him' with a piece of note paper!

That really sucks man. Those are some deep scratches. 2mm? I didn't even realize that the metal on the lid was 2mm thick.

Sounds like you should be requesting some extra 'special services' to 'pay back' the damage.

To get back to the original post, I've actually just now stumbled across something that may help! I doubt it'll completely solve it, but this may definitely be worth a try considering it's your brand new PowerBook. It'd be worth the cost to me:

Hope that helps!

And yet, he's a verifiable mac user. I've seen separate pics of him with a Pismo and 15" TiBook on his desk.

I'm not sure how much I think this will help. Let me explain why:

This is a polish. A polish naturally has some small abrasive material in it so that it can take down the edges of light scratches, levelling the surface.

Because these scratches are deep (he said 2mm, which is probably an exaggeration- I don't think the lid is that thick) the result will probably be that the lid will get nice and shiny and polish off the anodized surface, but that because the scratches are deep, they'll not get any polish at all, and look just as ugly.

What I think I might do if this were me, is get a dremel tool, and equip it with the conical shaped buffing tool. Place a small amount of polish in the gouge and use the tip of the buffing tool to polish only inside the scratch.

It might not help, but at least you don't mess up the rest of the lid by just polishing the whole thing.

Sorry if this has been confusing but it's the ti model not the new alu style ones. will either of the techniques still work?

Check your homeowner's/renter's insurance policy for computer coverage. If you have it, file a claim and get it sent to Apple for repair. The insurance company will cover the cost, minus your deductible.

Generally speaking (depending on the terms of the actual policy, IANAUnderwriter, speak to your agent, etc.), it would cover anything that damages your computer(s) unless it was an intentional act by one of the named insureds (you). This includes, sadly enough, viruses.

Yes, that's right. Homeowners policies with computer coverage likely cover any "damage" caused by viruses. The only problem is that you have to come up with proof-of-loss. About a year ago, I argued (unsuccessfully, at the time) that we should require proof of anti-virus software as a means of loss control, just like we require railings on a deck, or don't write policies with vicious dogs, trampolines, or an extensive loss history.

Insurance companies will likely pay more attention to this issue when policyholders begin making claims on their computer coverage for that sort of damage.

Tipaint.com made matters worse for my Ti. It will no way leave your Ti looking like new. The only real choice I see are those plastic Ti slip on lid covers made especially for the Ti. Don't you guys remember those? I am not sure of the link; they might be sold only in Japan, not sure.

That bites, hmm so how did it look after "TiPaint"? Was it really that bad? What are those Ti slip on lid covers? Never seen it b/4. So now no options left?

I found this ti armor thing anyone heard anything about it http://www.vixinc.com/

Yes, this applies for the ti as well- although I stripped all the paint off a ti just to get an even look after gouges. The tipaint doesn't do the trick well.

check out http://homepage.mac.com/alasaracina/PhotoAlbum21.html

to see how I did it.
