Greetings,
Ok. This one is too weird. I wouldn't believe this one myself unless I could reproduce the problem.
Hardware:
PowerBook G4 1 GHZ
1 gigabyte RAM
40G Drive
Combo
Software:
10.2.5
Safari .73
Problem:
Strange intermittent noise produced when safari is trying to retrieve various data.
Details:
I initially thought this sort of high-pitched noise was coming from my hard drive. I was a little skeptical of this though, since I could do a find / -name * and this noise would not reproduce itself. I just kind of forgot about the noise for the last couple of days since it didn't happen very often and because it was a non-intrusive type of noise.
Tonight the sound started to irritate me. After doing some investigating I confirmed for sure that sound was not coming from my hard drive since after putting my ear to this machine the noise seemed to be coming from the area where the built on NIC is and where the USB ports on the machine are. (BTW, this occurs when I am using my airport card or if I am plugged into a LAN).
As I stated earlier under the category of "problem", I narrowed the noise down to when I was trying to retrieve information from the Internet. Lynx, or any type of command line application would not produce this sound. I loaded up Camino and went to the exact page I was on with Safari, and Camino would not make any noise when I clicked on a particular link, though Safari would.
This is in no way trying to get advertisement for googlegear.com, but I can reproduce the sound over and over on their page. If you go to www.googlegear.com in Safari .73 and click on the Login link, that is when I hear the high-pitched noise. Camino, IE, and several other open source browsers produce no such noise.
This is a very strange thing, and I was wondering if anyone else out there could reproduce this problem or had any ideas or experiences with this type of thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need more information on anything, please ask.

Yeah, I have this issue. It's been discussed earlier on this forum, too, but I don't know if any resolution was reached. I'll search back through and see if I can find anything, but I know what you're talking about.

Apple has a Knowledge Base document about it. It's completely normal, and nothing to worry about.
My Ti 800 did it, and most people who have a Ti 1Ghz say they do, too. It's common with high-performance Video accelerators, and high-megahertz processors.

Thanks for the information. I wouldn't call it completely normal. It is very anoying now that it has caught my attention.
Back to Camino.

My TiBook does it too, but I've been told it's normal. It seems to do it more pronouncedly in Safari, and not as much in Camino. Strange.

Do a check for updates in the Software Update preference pane. Have a nice listen.

IMHO, it has something to do with Airport. It also seems louder/more noticeable when the machine is plugged in as opposed to running on battery.
