"If you choose "Longest Battery Life" or a Custom setting with Processor Performance set to "Reduced" in the Energy Saver preference panel, the sizzling sound quiets significantly so that it is practically inaudible in a quiet room. The PowerBook is quite tranquil this way (a pleasure to use), and I don't miss the processor performance since I'm generally just surfing at that time.

This tip seems to work from me (except that is not a good solution to loose processorspeed.

If you try this yourself it would be interesting to see if setting the Processor Performance to "Reduced"remove this noice at your powerbook too. "

i know it's just a bandaid...but ooohhh the silence

hey, I wrote that original tip! Cool.

I switch to Reduced whenver i'm not in the office. In the office, I want highest performance and I don't mind the noise there.

I was at an Apple Store yesterday, and held my ear to the 17" on display. It sizzles too.

the keyboard may sizzle a bit, but i'll tell you this, atleast the PB17 doesn't get hot enough so that the sizzling is actually your skin burning (this is a direct assault on PC laptops that can literally burn you). my PB17 is 99% of the time cool to the touch. a little warmth sometimes, but not as drastic as PC laptops.
