since they didn't upgrade the video hardware, my gut says yes. why not give it a shot and let us know if it does work?

I would email the guy who posted the hack on his web site and ask him. I cannot recall his email address, but if you go to the hack web site, then it is listed there.

Have fun... Tony.

Hi, I got my iBook 900 MHz on tuesday and couldn't resist to try the spanning hack.
Guess what - IT WORKS!!!
If you are unsure about it, there is a possibility to try the hack without making it permanent. After rebooting you have mirroring again.
Here is the link:

Have fun with a spanning enabled iBook

Thank you soo much, Yey! , All I have to do now is wait until monday, 55 hours 29 minutes left until it is in my possesion....hopefully

P.S Sorry i'm just unsure about this and wanted to make sure I understand what im going to be doing, can you let me know if this is right

when I turn on my iBook i hold down Command-, Option-, O- and F-keys.

then type in:

1 " /" select-dev return
2 00000000 " graphic-options" get-my-property 2drop ! return
3 mac-boot return

for non-permanent, and

1 nvedit return
2 " /" select-dev return
3 00000000 " graphic-options" get-my-property 2drop ! return
4 unselect return
5 ctrl-c
6 nvstore return
7 setenv use-nvramrc? true return
8 reset-all return

If I want it permanently.

I have applecare, if I had a problem later on Not with the hack but with a physical defect, they wouldn't say its void because of this would they?

The commands are ok if "return" means the <RETURN> key ;-).
I'm not sure about Applecare. Just to avoid any problems I would zap the PRAM if possible before sending it in for a repair. This will revert the iBook to the default mirroring behaviour.

Bye

Yeah the returns were <RETURN>, so you can revert back to the original after you apply it permanently? I thought you were stuck with it.

That'd be stupid. Does the AppleCare licence at some point say "you are not supposed to press the following keys at boot time ..."? Just changing a single bit can hardly void your warranty.

Stink different.

The 3 line version listed above is the temporary one, it will work until you restart your machine, after which you will revert back to the regular mirror only mode. If you don't want to make it permanent, then just enter the 3 line version whenever you restart your iBook, which shouldn't be often if you just put it to sleep the majority of the time.

A word of caution.
I enabled spaniing on my iBook and everything worked fine until I pluged it to my TV. After a half hour screen just went blank but you could still watch the movie on the TV. The only way to get picture on the iBook was to unplug the TV adapter, and when I did that the screen started flickering. I rebooted the machine and zapped the pram, however the screen was still flickering big time. I restarted a few times and no change. At that point I thought I screwed it up. So there I was getting mad at myself for applying the patch and having to deal with Apple now. Luckily I turned it off for about two hours or so and when it booted back up everything was fine. The moral is you should be careful wiht this because it really can mess your computer up ...

I applied the hack and never had a problem. If you are encountering any problems, I highly doubt that they are related to the hack since you are just enabling a native ability of the video card.

Have fun... Tony.

this is similar to what happened to my iBook 800 (video conking out after plugging TV adapter), only mine was much worse... no video at all on TV or on screen. they got the screen to show up very faint at the store by plugging and unplugging a video adapter, but not for long and there was a lot of flickering. and i never even tried the spanning hack! - so maybe it's not what messed up your screen. they're replacing my logic board at the moment.
