Hi,

Im not a poweruser at all, i dont do any rendering, or movie editting. I only program in PHP, mySQL, and WebDesign. I MIGHT need to work with C++ later too;

(1) Will a 12" PB work SMOOTH when i have a text editor, 3 internet pages and Photoshop on at the same time ( not working, just on )

(2) Will the top of the line iBook be faster than the low-end 12"?

Thanks in advance

(1) Yes, your experience will be smooth considering OS X is excellent at multi-tasking.

(2) I'm assuming you plan on using Photoshop since you'll have it on for the most part so the answer is no, an iBook will not be faster by any means. I'd suggest you go with a G4 laptop because of one reason: Altivec. And we all know Photoshop loves Altivec.

Good luck with your decision, I'm pretty sure I made the right one.
Here are a few close up photos I took of mine.

I concur with these opinions. Here are the apps that I'm currently running, as smooth as glass:

iTunes 4
Mail
Terminal
Project Builder (development tool)
Interface Builder (again, dev)
CocoaBrowser
iChat
Safari

Now, I have 640 MB of memory, which is substantially SnappierTM than the stock 256 MB, but all the same, I can surf the web while compiles are going on, and everything's just peachy smooth...

And I also agree that the Fastest iBook wouldn't compare. Here're the diffs:

= iBook is 33 MHz faster (not a substantial diff)
+ PowerBook has DDR RAM (Hey, faster memory bus!, and DRM is faster for hard drive, vid card, etc.)
+ Faster system bus
+ Altivec

Basically, while I think the iBook is great if you can only afford a $999 computer, I wouldn't recommend it if the person can afford the $1800 12" PowerBook, since OS X really likes Altivec.

AND, you can use 1GB DDR SODIMMs in the 12" PowerBook, so your max memory is actually 1.125 GB of memory, not 640 MB, like the iBook.

[EDIT: I always forget that stupid UBB screws up the unicode [tm] ]

I wass about to say that the 1 Ghz+ SODIMM has sealed it for me... but then I saw this when I checked out the price:

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/list...&submit=Go

128MB - £17.62
256MB - £31.71
512MB - £110.44
1GB - £751.00

Don't fall over dead Marc. Micron (Crucial) hasn't ramped up production yet and the demand hasn't been that high (since most people don't even know about them). The 1GB SODIMMS will drop in price in just a month or two. In 3-4 months it'll be the same price as 2 512MB sticks. You can bank on it.

Got my 512 MB SODIMM from 18004Memory, and it was about $90. That's not that much, considering the cost of the laptop ($1800), but if you just can't get the additional $90, can you do $40? 'Cause a 256 MB SODIMM to replace the 128 MB it comes with would still help a lot! But really, while 384 MB of RAM is helpful, you really want to be at 640, I think, especially since there's only a $50 price diff.

If you really, seriously can't afford it, you can always sell plasma to make up the difference... Blood for memory!

I've just got a TiBook with 512 Ram - if the 12" can go to 1.25 GB, what can the 15" go to?
