I'm considering getting the previous generation combo drive iBook as I have found them for $1099 refurbished. I'm just wondering if anyone bought a refubished iBook. What kind of condition was it in? How long is the warranty? I think I heard that it's just a 90 day warranty, in which case I think I'll just spring for the new combo drive iBook.

Thanks.

i just bought a refurbished 700mhz ibook with a combo drive direct from the online apple store and it is in perfect condition. no scratches, nothing! it has a 1 year warranty and 90 day tech support. i will be getting applecare before the warranty runs out. The only problem i had was that i was told it would come pre-loaded with OSX 10.1.5 and that there would be OSX 10.2 jag disks included in the box and there werent any. I called apple and i bitched alittle and the sent me the full retail version of OSX 10.2 jag for free, and they even overnighted it to me. (also for free)

The only issue i can think of, is that the ibook 700 takes forever to boot up and is slower at loading web pages and downloading jpegs than my 400mhz B&W G3. But the G3 has a 7200rpm HD and 256mb of ram. The ibook has a stock HD (4200rpm?) and only 128mb of ram. I've been told by many people on this board that maxing out the ram on the ibook should wake it up considerably.

anyways good luck on your decision

Damn it... I missed the boat... the place I found the refurb 800 w/combo for $1099 no longer any left -- now they're $1199... oh well. Anybody else know where I can find them for $1099?

By the way, thanks all for you input on the issue, I really appreciate it.

I found one at a CompUSA a year ago, came with the one year warranty included. I've had no problems with it except the battery, which they promptly replaced

I was going to spring for the old 800 combo right after the new ones were released, but all of that changed with a phone call to Westworld Computers, located here in Canada. I asked how much they were selling the machine for and the lady on the phone said $1899 Canadian. Well, I asked the reason for such a high unwarranted price and she was silent for a few moments and than proceeded to "remind" me that it was actually a $200 price drop.

So the old iBook lineup was:

$1599 12" 700Mhz 20GB CDROM 16VRAM
$2099 12" 800MHz 30GB Combo 32VRAM
$2399 14" 800Mhz 30GB Combo 32VRAM

The new lineup is:

$1499 12" 800Mhz 30GB CDROM 32VRAM
$1999 12" 900MHz 40GB Combo 32VRAM
$2299 14" 900Mhz 40GB Combo 32VRAM

And they wanted to charrge $1899 for the last rev 800 Combo machine. For $100 more I could get the new 900 Combo with 100 more Mhz and an extra 10GB for the hardrive.

Or I could get the new 800Mhz iBook without the Combo drive for $1499. Essentially, the current 800Mhz machine is identical to the last one, excluding the optical drive, but in my oppinion the combo drive alone isn't worth $400.

Westworld Computers should be ashamed of themselves! I was ready to buy my second computer from them, but now I'll make my future purchases elseware...

I don't think it's only Westworld's fault... Apple treats all their resellers like dirt, especially non-US ones. They're probably just breaking even if they sell them for that price.

My refurb 800 was actually in better condition than my "new" 600 which shipped with scratches.

Stink different.
