I ordered a 17" and 30GB iPod Monday after the announcement and got an estimated ship date of 2-3 weeks for the 17" with an OOB 5/19/2003. However, when I configured the same exact order just now, I the estimated ship date is only 3-5 days for the 17", while my original order two days ago retains its original OOB date. Should I cancel my previous order and re-order right now or should I keep the faith in the earlier order? I'm curious to know what you all think because I've read about some terribly inconsistent shipping methods from the Apple store. One more thing, I'm using my one time ADC discount on this one, so I can't just order from the many other resellers who seem to have current stock of the 17"

I would cancel it and re-order! I think you'll have much better luck with the shipping! Or you could just wait 3-5 days and see if your ships (if not, re-order)

No, no!!!! If it's an ADC order, you probably don't wanna do that, because they might not be so kind as to let you re-order. CALL the ADC dept. first before making any snap decisions, or you may lose your discount. Better safe than sorry. My 17" PB shipped 2 weeks early from ADC.

I cancelled my ADC order and it was no problem, but better safe than sorry I suppose.

When you reconfigured, did you add the iPod to the order? If not, that might be the hold-up if you elected to have them ship all items at once. Since it's new, it's possible--though I haven't checked--that they aren't shipping those out right away.

I checked the "ship items as they become available" option. I've got an OOB 0f 5/5/2003 for the iPod and 5/19/2003 for the 17". I've also noticed that my shipping has been upgraded to priority overnight even though I chose the free ground shipping option. Does that mean anything?

I don't really see any problem with cancelling and re-ordering, but I think I'm just going to play it safe and call ADC tomorrow (they're closed right now) as AssassyN suggested and see what I can find out. Any other ideas/suggestions are of course welcome in the meantime.

Apple automatically upgraded most all ground shipping 17" PBs to Overnight (including my own) just to get them to customers quicker to help their reputation. So it's basically happened to everyone, so don't be alarmed.

Too, definitely CALL ADC tomorrow first and inquire there if cancelling and re-ordering will speed things up or not. I'll bet they'll tell you to keep your order, as those OOB dates are usually "worst case senario" dates and you'll probably see both items a good bit sooner than expected. Let us know whatcha find out.

Here's a look at how my ADC PowerBook order ended up going. I purchased my Student ADC membership on the evening of April 19th and faxed in my documents immediately; my account was completely confirmed on April 21st. Ordered my PowerBook that same day and was given an estimated ship time of 2-3 weeks - it ended up shipping on April 25th, even though the OOB date never changed. I really can't be happier about how smoothly the whole ordering process was... now I'm just in a bind in that I had my order shipped to my home in Atlanta, and I'm stuck here at school for another couple of weeks. I would just have my parents ship it down, but that'll just distract me from more important things... like getting a tan before I lock myself indoors for a few weeks messing around with the PowerBook. Anyway, I'd probably just leave the order as is... mine ended up shipping way early without a hitch.

Thanks for all the replies. I just got off the phone with the ADC folks who advised me to keep my orignal order since I'm already in queue. They also said the Apple Store's estimate of 3-5 days was probably wrong.

The rep was actually quite helpful and said my iPod would probably ship today. He even checked 17" stock and tried to move up the shipment date for the powerbook. He was able to get it up to 5/13 - a bit earlier than my original OOB of 5/19. He also said there was still a chance it might ship even earlier.

Thanks again for the feedback. I'm still gonna hope for even faster shipping like FSUSU reported. It'll be weird to have the new iPod, but still no machine (I sold my 15" TiBook 1Ghz last week), but they do say patience is a virtue.

Great to hear man...I'm glad they were able to move you up some. And like I said, mine shipped 2 weeks early, and so don't be surprised to get yours earlier than expected also.

Hope you get your iPod soon, lol, although you'll just hafta admire it until your machine arrives I guess.

Quick update on this matter. I am very happy I kept my original order since I just got notification that my 17" shipped today (straight from Taiwan!). So, despite an original OOB date 3 weeks after placing the order, the powerbook ended up shipping just 4 days later. This story sounds pretty consistent others' experience with ADC orders. Needless to say, I am very pleased and impressed.

Funny thing is my iPod didn't end up shipping as expected. That was kinda weird since over at the Peripherals forum, several folks are reporting that they've already receieved shipping notification for delivery today, 5/2/2003. It's really not a big deal, but just thought is was interesting since I placed my order on Monday at 2:00PM EST. Oh well, maybe by the time my 17" arrives from Taiwan everything will end up arriving together.

Thanks again for all your feedback. I'm looking forward to joining the ranks of all you other proud 17" owners.

I bet you're going crazy just waiting...I figured it'd end up shipping out a good bit sooner than expected. And just a note, my 17" PB arrived at my door the very next day that it left Taiwan, and I live on the opposite of America where it arrived for a customs check, so you MIGHT end up getting it tomorrow.

As for your iPod, I'd guess it'll leave in about 3-5 business days from now. Apple ships them out in a pretty random order, so ordering first doesn't necessarily mean yours will ship first, and this has been proven by Apple time and time again. Plus, while you wait you'll have time to get aquainted with your machine and get your playlists arranged in OS X and ready to transfer to your iPod when it arrives.
