I run it every time I reboot, which is when an installer tells me to, I'm going away for an extended time, or something very bad happens

Is the disk utility on the install CD? Where do I run it from?

Thanks!

Is it more effective to re-boot using the Jaguar CD and run the disk utility off the CD?

You won't be able to fix problems on the boot drive unless you boot from the CD. However, I find it's easier just to boot into single-user mode (hold down Cmd+S) and run fsck -y until problems are fixed. This accomplishes the same thing.
