Specs are 8x for CD-R burning. I read in these forums, that is is 16x instead. Now, I burned a few CDs. Toasts says burning speed 16x, but it took me >7 minutes burning the 60 minute audio CD. So I guess it says 16x, but is 8x really. Right?

Something's wrong if it's taking that long and you've really got Toast setup to burn at 16x. Mine burns a full 80-minute CD in just around 5 minutes each and everytime. Be sure you've set the Toast preferences to burn at 16x and not at 8x. That time amount you quoted sounds exactly like an 8x speed.

Toast setting IS 16x. I chose it in a list of 1x - 16x. 24x is darkened.

What am I doing wrong?

Recorder info:

Matshita DVD-R UJ-815 (MMC3)
ATA
Firmware DWDB
Cache 2 MB

I use "Disc-At-Once" (default settings), "copy" function button of Toast 5.1.2.

Remaining burn time is 3 to 4 minutes, but in real time, each second on the time counter takes 2 seconds to proceed¨

Whoa...that's quite strange. My DVD-R is the same model, and has the exact same firmware, which was my next guess, but now that's been voided.

I've used those exact settings you mentioned and got 16x burns...have you tried burning through iTunes?

What kind of media are you using? even some certified 16x + media can't burn that speed. I use 40X media, burns at 8x, but clocks down from a 16x speed.

Sounds like a Firmware error...you may want to contact AppleCare and present them with your problem...let us know what they say.

I guess I can't do that. Apple specs say 8x which the firmware supports. So what would I want from Apple? All fine from their point of view. That's why I'm asking you guys.

you might want to try a name brand media, i.e., Sony, memorex. sometimes the genreic/cheapo brands don't burn as fast on the "better" burners that know that you are using chepa media. I'm using AT&T media, made by verbatim, and it burns at 8x, even though it should burn at 16x.

Thanks. I probably will.

You seem to have the same experience as I have. Did you try other brands? Why do they fail? Just bad quality or a technical reason?

I would guess that it's the kind of dye they use. There is that whole Orange Book II standards that you'll see some CD-rs are certified as meeting. I ahven't tried my other CD-rs (Philips), but my bro with a 17" PB urns at 16x with those.
