hello! i recently found this great place. . .and noticed lots of people who have recently come into possession of a new PB, several of whom happen to be college students and as a student myself, i was wondering what people have found to be the best way to afford one? (drooling and hoping to figure out how to buy one soon. . .perhaps as a college necessity for teaching program. . .) and is it possible to get the education discount more than once-i also work at a high school.
thanks much for your help!

First off, WELCOME to the MacNN Forums!
As a college student, you have a great chance to get a Mac at a 20% discount through ADC.
ADC is a group of Apple Developers that get great benefits upon joining, and although joining is expensive for most, you can get these benefits for only $99 if you're enrolled in a college even part time, regardless of class load or class scheduling. One of the greatest benefits is a one-time 20% off discount on the purchase of an Apple computer & Apple accessories. Here's how you can join:
"Just go to http://connect.apple.com and select "Join" to purchase a Student Membership. Put a Student Membership in your cart and "Check-Out". Pay your $99, fill out all the info. it asks (including your Student ID [many universities, including my own, simply use your Social Security # as your ID, so if you're unsure, check into it first] at your college, this is very important), and order it. You'll then be instantly ready to purchase via the Student Discount. You do so by heading HERE and click that banner that says "ADC Hardware Purchase Program" to enter the ADC Store. Wowww look at the pretty prices!
Okay, after you're through gawking, get to ordering! Just put whatever you want in your cart, and make absolute *SURE!* you get everything you need, because once the order is placed, that discount is FOREVER gone, regardless of what you "forgot" to order at the time of purchase. Too, many things in accessories won't be discounted, as it's the Apple-made hardware that's discounted. For instance, a Microsoft mouse will be the same price through the ADC store as the normal one, so don't be shocked, only Apple stuff is discounted, but even the small things like Power Adapters, batteries, etc. are discounted if made by Apple.
Then, place your order, give them your name, shipping info., credit card info., etc. and you're set! Things will begin to ship as they become available. In about a week or two you'll get an email from Apple requesting a FAX from you to them with your College letter of Acceptance (original, no copies) OR your current Class Schedule from your University, PLUS your Student ID card or Driver's License. Also, if you want to type out a page stating your full name, address, and your ADC Membership Confirmation Number (that'll be included in the email they'll send you after you've paid your $99 to confirm that you're in) and fax that page too, it speeds up there confirmation process. Once that's in to Apple, they won't email you telling you it's done, but keep a check on your account at connect.apple.com, and you'll see your Assets (ADC Student Membership and ADC Mailings) become updated w/ a current date, which will be the date they confirmed you after your faxes. This confirmation of faxes allows them to start sending your monthly mailings of free code, free info., free t-shirts, free programs, etc. for a one-year period (very cool stuff!). After that one-year, you can renew for $99 for another year, and you'll continue to get all your monthly goodies, but you will NOT ever receive another 20% discount, even with renewing. That discount is for joiners only, unfortunately, so use it very wisely!"
If you have any other questions, just let me know and I'll be glad to help!

I'd recommend what AssassyN instructed. I follow his instruction and got a jaw-dropping deal. I got the 17" PB and the new iPod for less than retail price of the new 17" PB. Plus as an ADC student, you get lots of development stuff from Apple that I think is very useful.
If I'm a CS professor, I'll make my students join ADC since they send you lots of useful development materials.

i was going to use adc, but on the requirements page it said that you have to be a student in a computer science/development class. i'm not sure if they check this, because of what assassyn said, but thats what the site says.
i got my 12" at a local college that had them at great prices (adc level without the membership). i had a friend there get it for me. if you are a college student or are going to be, you can easily get one for less than the list price. goodluck!

SOME college bookstores occasionally offer exceptional deals that match ADC pricing, but don't count it. Certainly check into it, but if that falls through, ADC is the way to go. The reason class schedules aren't a factor in being able to get the ADC Discount is that no matter what your major is, you can still have the intellect and the ability/desire to code for the Mac in your spare time. A cooking major might spend hours at night with his nose in a Java book, and Apple would certainly wanna give him a discount to get him coding for Mac. I'm personally going into Business Management, and I can say from experience, class schedules aren't a factor.

AssyssyN (hope i spelled that right, doing from memory. . .) and others: so it is possible to get BOTH the adc & education discount? and then get the loan through apple? or elsewhere (as differing experiences have been for all?)
thanks!

You can only get either ADC discount or educational discount NOT BOTH

This is correct, on a single purchase, you can use the ADC Discount *OR* the Education discount, but you can't combine them.
However, you can use your Education discounts on future purchasing as many times as you like, whereas the ADC Discount is a one-time shot, BUT, it's a 20% (big!) discount.
Too, with ADC & Education purchases, you can apply & use the Apple Loan they provide.

Um, except for the tiny fact that you *can't* put 1GIG of RAM in a 12" PowerBook...
Try 1.1GIGs (128MB built-in + 1GIG RAM module) maybe, but not 1GIG.

I thought the 128MB was on-board and the second slot only took a 512?

Yep, that slot in the 12" AlBook can handle a 256MB stick, a 512MB stick, or the newly released (not sold on Apple's site) 1GIG stick.

Hi Nick,
If you're at all interested, I'm selling my 2-month old PowerBook, Extreme Base, and an extra battery. Feel free to e-mail me or private-message me for the details. =)

Yeah, you get a loan through MBNA w/ 6 months same as cash. Basically you'll open an extra line of credit.
It is not a bad deal if you don't want to front + $3000.
I brought my AppleCare through it...

That deal is not valid anymore. There new "deal" is as low as 5.99% APR, which almost no one will be able to get anyway.

The ADC thing sounds pretty great... but what's the consensus on whether or not they check if you're a computer science student? I'd love to do this but unfortunately I'm a grad student and not in computer science.

No it is, you gotta get it through the education store though. You can't get it through the regular store.
If you go there now into the Education's Store site you'll see it on the right hand column.

but how realistic is this? i would love to have a 17"er, but doubt i will be able to afford it anytime soon. . .and a 15" wld be nice (unless the 12" is just so very worth it. . .pls no flames, still debating for school next year. . .)but is the updated 15"er something realistic to wait for? or still rumorware?

It's not a matter of opinion, rather one of fact. I'll be a Business Management major beginning the fall of 2003 (I'm currently still in High School, but I'm 18) and I've already recieved my 17" PB, 23" HD Display, and everything else I ordered through my Student ADC Membership. Just fax your Letter of Acceptance and not your class schedule if you can help it, and you'll be fine. Even with your class schedule you should be set as well. Again, you *do not* need computer science related classes whatsoever to get the ADC Discount.

hmmm... thanks -- I'm definitely going to look into it. I might hold off on faxing in the letter of acceptance... might look suspicious that the letter is from a Law School

AssassyN, must you place an order as soon as you join ADC, or can you do it anytime within the 1 year membership. The reason why I'm asking is because I wont be taking classes in the summer, and i dont want to wait until the fall to be able to join!
I'm holding out until the summer because there are many rumors and some of them may turn out to be true!

Nope, not at all. Anytime during your year-long membership you can place the order. There's no pressure to place it sooner than that, it's totally up to you.
