Hope someone can give me a little advice...my combo drive suddenly ceased working about six weeks ago (after less than a year of ownership). I was in the midst of a cross-country move and couldn't be bothered with it, but I'm getting anxious about backing up data.

It won't even recognize ANY CD or DVD placed in the drive (including blank ones). I'm still running OS X 10.1 (latest version) and was going to upgrade to 10.2 (but can't, since the CD won't be recoginzed!)

In additon to the (obvious) solution of sending off the iBook I've been considering options like getting a firewire combo drive, or perhaps an external hard drive. I want to back up my data before it leaves my hands for Apple Care, but been wondering if other iBook users have had similar problems. (Heard a rumor that upgrading to 10.2 solves combo-drive problems...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

Try creating a new user, logging on as that user, and seeing if the problem is still there.

I had a problem with my iBook's Combo drive where it would not recognise audio CDs due to a bad file in one of the preferences.

If it works with the new user I might be able to help you to look for a similar problem.

If it does turn out to be a hardware problem, be sure to take care of it before your 1 year warranty is up!
