Now that we all know that the PB UJ 815 superdrive is very selective about media for DVD-R and DVD-RW writing, I would like to point out that the current drive/firmware also has severe reading problems.

The reading capabilities of the UJ-815 with DWDB MMC-3 firmware are poor in particular when it comes to reading already recorded DVD+R/+RW discs. I cannot _read_ Verbatim DVD+R, Intenso DVD+R, Sony DVD+RW, FujiFilm DVD+RW, Ricoh DVD+RW. I have yet to find any written DVD+R/+RW that is accepted for plain and simple reading by this "Superdrive".

These DVD+R/+RW disks are _all_ readable and play on any DVD-Rom and consumer player that I have tried so far (a Pioneer DVD-R 105, a Toshiba DVD-Rom, 2 different Sony: a cheap DVD-Rom and a relatively expensive DRU500A, and some not so well known brand, I do not even remember it's name) and even my TV-DVD player Sony NS900 that according to specs should not be able to read DVD+R/+RW can read camcorder files burned to DVD+R/+RW.

And no, I definitely do not want to care about any esoteric compatibility flag settings (although I could apply those, I simply should not have to these days, since it is a matter of proper firmware to handle the compatibility correctly).

In light of the compatibility that all new DVD-Players have today, I have no choice but calling the UJ-815 firmware (any currently known version) developer grade, not even alpha-test.

Shame on you Apple/Matshita.

PS: I generally like Apple products, but I think that Apple recently did not make the best hardware design choices. Lack of USB 2.0 support (that everyone else uses for more than a year now) in Apple's most recent machines is another disturbing example. For the price Apple charges, it could stay a bit more in line with PC standards that it did not invent itself. It should not choose to trail the industry with adopting such a standard.

PPS: Does anyone know, when we will be able to get the Apple version of the Radeon 9800 or GForce FX for our desktop Apples ?

(My apologies for this complaint, if I am the only person experiencing DVD+R/+RW reading failure. I have only tried the + disks burned on a Sony DRU500A. BTW: DVD-R/RWs burnt on this recorder can be read by the UJ-815)
