i want to buy a 512 meg ram chip for my tibook 400.
i know my computer uses pc100 memory to match the system bus. but when i search for memory at online stores - crucial, ramjet, memory-to-go, macmall, etc, --they all try to sell me pc133 memory (even though on some of those sites it expressly says that pc133 ram is not backward compatible.) it seems that only the 512 chips are pc133, while smaller chips are pc100.
so, can i use the pc133 memory? anyone know? also, can anyone recommend a specific brand or seller?
thanks much.

I'm assuming you have a Titanium G4 PowerBook (TiBook), correct?
If so, PC133 RAM is fully compatible with it, and I'd recommend whichever is cheapest from the following sites:
www.ramseeker.com
or
www.18004memory.com
Good luck, and feel free to post any further Q's!

No problem, glad I could help!
BTW, those two sites I listed have long been extremely reputable Mac RAM sellers and have served many here on these boards as well, so you're sure to have great shipping & service from either.

The 17" PowerBook uses PC2700 DDR RAM modules. Currently, 256MB and 512MB modules work for sure in the 17" PB, but 1GIG modules are *possible* to work in the future.
And for reference, the 12" PowerBook uses PC2100 DDR RAM, and it's single RAM expansion slot can accompany a 128MB stick, 256MB stick, 512MB stick, or a 1GIG stick that's already been proven to work in these machines.

Thanks!!!!
Just another question. I went to this site
http://www.18004memory.com/category....p;subcatid=904
and they seem to offer two different
kind of chipsets. Is there something I have to check for the memory "speed"?
To rephrase it is there an option of faster and slower 2700 Ram I can get? What type is the one coming inside the 17''
Thanks for one more time!!!!

Either of those two options will work fine in a 17" PB. The only difference is that the more expensive "HyperSpeed" RAM is labeled by a known manufacturer such as Kingston, Crucial, Samsung, etc. The "Generic" RAM runs at the exact same speed and everything, there's no differences except with the Generic you don't get a name-brand on it and some people will claim they are more likely to fail on you, but I've always used Generic RAM in my built systems without a hitch. Plus, 18004Memory has a great return policy, so you're covered if it fails you.
