(Or rather, does my VAIO have bipolar disorder?)
Anyone have any particular explanation for this:
I had my AC voltage detector out today and noticed that my iBook set it off from within 5-6 inches from any direction... even above the LCD in the standard "open" position. This was with the iBook plugged in. I then unplugged the power cord and went to DC battery power - the voltage detector went silent. Okay, makes sense.
However - my Sony VAIO laptop behaves exactly opposite. When on AC power, my AC detector is silent, when I go to battery power, the detector goes crazy. What the hell is going on? (FWIW, the AC detector had to be virtually in contact with the VAIO before it'd go off, unlike the iBook).

First of all, what the heck is an AC voltage detector? Does this detect voltage in the air? I'm an engineer and I've never heard of such a thing. If this does, indeed, detect some frequencies in the air, perhaps it is picking up Airport signals. Perhaps this is an EMI detector. Can you clarify or post a link?

Below is the tool I'm talking about. Close proximity to AC (120/240Vac 50/60Hz) causes it to beep and flash red - and yesterday it went off within 6 inches of any direction of my iBook. Today things seem back to normal, regardless of airport activity, battery charing/not-charging... Maybe I was just getting some Maximum Overdrive vibes yesterday.
