The 12" AlBook can easily be hooked up to external monitor/display, as long as it's a VGA display. The 12" PowerBook cannot output to a display that accepts DVI input or ADC input without expensive adapters, and while they perform just fine, it's really not worth the money.

I use my 17" PB on an external display all the time while it's at home, and it (and the 12" PowerBook) can push a higher resolution to an external display than it's own built-in display, so you can actually gain screen real-estate.

PhotoShop, and any other apps. you use, run perfectly fine on an external display w/ no lag or hangups whatsoever.

If you have any further Q's, just post!

Nope, because the 17" Studio Display uses Apple's "ADC" connection. You can only connect the 12" AlBook and an Apple Display by using this adapter:

The program runs great, but if you're talking about how easy it is to see and manipulate photos on such a small display, I'd say: "average".

It's clear with such a small screen you won't have huge amounts of space to see massive photos, however, the 12" AlBook sports a pretty tight resolution which helps add to the amount of screen real-estate. For the basic-to-amatuer user, it'll be perfect. For those hardcore users managing hundred-megabyte files, the screen may prove to be a bit tight.

would i suffer any slowdown on say 11 x 18 comic book page that would hold my pencilling art, i would do some touching up on the drawings and maybe add some color once in a while?? Would my workspace really feel cramped up?? is the resolution 10**by7** good for such touch ups??

Im trying to find the best deal i can get from a powerbook. Im enetering college next year and I want a powerbook whether it will be a 12" with 17" or 20" display, 15" pb (not likely or 17" pb (maybe) not sure yet. But what ever i get i hope that it runs most programs for the next 1 1/2 year to 2 years by then the 970 powermac (dual) be out and i can afford it. SORRY IF SOME OF MY QUESTIONS MIGHT SEEM REDUNDANT OR ALREDY BEEN ASKED BEFORE.

Forget about buying an external display and get yourself a 17-inch PowerBook.

Trust me i have thought about that, But i can get a 12" pb 640 mb, airport extreme, 60 gb (don't really need a dvd-r) and 17 inch for same as 17" pb or 20 inch for a little more display with adapter for for a little more than a 17" pb. Plus im getting a powermac in about 1 1/2 years and i can use the display for my powermac too. Thats why i posted before if there was a way to hook up a 17" pb to a powermac , cuz i have thought about buying one. I haven't seen any really amazing performace gains by the 17"pb on the 12" pb that i would have hoped, see benchmarks by macworld, and i don't feel like waiting cuz there is always something better. Still a 17" is nice, hmmmm

The 12" AlBook would do sufficiently for the work you've mentioned, although I'm positive you'd feel much less cramped working on an external display, but if you got in a bind and needed to work on the 12" screen, it could be certainly done.

Too, your best deal will be through ADC. Since you're entering college next year, IF you've already got your Letter of Acceptance, you can apply for the ADC (20% off) Discount. If you're too far off from getting into college, just keep a check on that list I provided earlier to get the best bundle deal, or if you want the absolute cheapest price, get a refurb. from either www.powermax.com, www.smalldog.com, or www.macconnection.com.

For more info. on ADC, read this:

ADC is a group of Apple Developers that get great benefits upon joining, and although joining is expensive for most, you can get these benefits for only $99 if you're enrolled in a college even part time, regardless of class load or class scheduling. One of the greatest benefits is a one-time 20% off discount on the purchase of an Apple computer & Apple accessories. Here's how you can join:

"Just go to http://connect.apple.com and select "Join" to purchase a Student Membership. Put a Student Membership in your cart and "Check-Out". Pay your $99, fill out all the info. it asks (including your Student ID [many universities, including my own, simply use your Social Security # as your ID, so if you're unsure, check into it first] at your college, this is very important), and order it. You'll then be instantly ready to purchase via the Student Discount. You do so by heading HERE and click that banner that says "ADC Hardware Purchase Program" to enter the ADC Store. Wowww look at the pretty prices!

Okay, after you're through gawking, get to ordering! Just put whatever you want in your cart, and make absolute *SURE!* you get everything you need, because once the order is placed, that discount is FOREVER gone, regardless of what you "forgot" to order at the time of purchase. Too, many things in accessories won't be discounted, as it's the Apple-made hardware that's discounted. For instance, a Microsoft mouse will be the same price through the ADC store as the normal one, so don't be shocked, only Apple stuff is discounted, but even the small things like Power Adapters, batteries, etc. are discounted if made by Apple.

Then, place your order, give them your name, shipping info., credit card info., etc. and you're set! Things will begin to ship as they become available. In about a week or two you'll get an email from Apple requesting a FAX from you to them with your College letter of Acceptance (original, no copies) OR your current Class Schedule from your University, PLUS your Student ID card or Driver's License. Also, if you want to type out a page stating your full name, address, and your ADC Membership Confirmation Number (that'll be included in the email they'll send you after you've paid your $99 to confirm that you're in) and fax that page too, it speeds up there confirmation process. Once that's in to Apple, they won't email you telling you it's done, but keep a check on your account at connect.apple.com, and you'll see your Assets (ADC Student Membership and ADC Mailings) become updated w/ a current date, which will be the date they confirmed you after your faxes. This confirmation of faxes allows them to start sending your monthly mailings of free code, free info., free t-shirts, free programs, etc. for a one-year period (very cool stuff!). After that one-year, you can renew for $99 for another year, and you'll continue to get all your monthly goodies, but you will NOT ever receive another 20% discount, even with renewing. That discount is for joiners only, unfortunately, so use it very wisely!"

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I'll be glad to help!

The 12" PB won't run the latest and greatest 3D games like Quake III and RtCW nearly as well as desktop machines or even the 15" TiBook and 17" PB due to it's slower CPU, lack of L3 cache, and slower graphics card. However, at lower resolutions the games should be playable, but you'll have to disable most of the eye candy to get it so. It's not a gaming machine, but it will do for the occasional gaming fix.

And to RMXO, just tryin' to help out.

All Apple displays require an ADC connection, while the PowerBook G4 12" only has a VGA output. But, you can buy an adapater to make it work.

Has anybody actually ever purchased that $400 adapter and connected the 12" to a large flat panel display? If so, how's the quality?

I'm getting really tired of waiting for the 15" to show up, esp. since my g3 died a quick and horrible death after installation of a powerlogix upgrade card.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Before I purchased a $400 adapter, I swear I'd sell my Apple Display and purchase a Formac Display w/ a VGA-input or another display in which you didn't need an adapter. That adapter is insance in my opinion.

I connect my 12" AlBook to a Viewsonic VX900 19" LCD, running at 1200 x 1024, using the VGA input. It's obviously not as good as the quality I get from a DVI connection, but it's good enough for average use and most design work.
