What do you guys think about this new upgrade from Powerlogix ? I'm thinking about it, but I'm a little worried about the small 512K L2 cache.

Or should I go for the G4 500 upgrade.

I would go with the 900 mhz G3, I think the 400 extra mhz make up for the AltiVec.

But what about the 512K L2 cache?

I think it depends on how much you use AltiVec aware apps.

I don't have scientific benchmarks, but I dont think level 3 cache on a G4 500 mhz processor would make it as fast as a 900mhz G3 processor. Go with the G3 for better perfomance and lower power consumption (re: heat)....provided you don't need altivec.

That 512 kb of L2 cache is running at full processor speed, vs. half speed like the 1 MB of backside L2 cache on the regular Pismo. So it's basically equivalent to 1 MB of backside cache. You shouldn't worry about it. I have an iBook that uses the 800 MHz 750fx and it's zippy.

Well, gee. I've been waiting for Powerlogix to actually SELL the 800 mhz upgrade. They announced it and then never released it. How long until the 900 is available? I'm just a bit jaded.

Ooh, zesty! I'll be looking into that 900mhz G3 upgrade very soon, I just don't think I'm ready to part with my Pismo... what a lovely machine it is, poor guy's just a little slow.

I'll have to look into Powerlogix's site to see what the deal is and hopefully sometime this Summer I'll be going for that G3 upgrade.

edit: The site for both the G4 500 and G3 900 Pismo upgrades is: http://www.powerlogix.com/buynow/service/index.html

$349 for the G3... not bad.
