The big electronic print where all the little transistors and chips and CPU reside on, basically your entire computer. Without the HD and CDrom that is.

The Mac term. Macs have 'applications', PCs have 'programs.' Apple calls them 'displays', PCs have 'monitors.' Can't think of any more right now. I prefer the Mac term for most things.

so I imagine my iBook was real bad!
I would have given a couple of hundreds to have it exchanged to a 900!
DOH!!!....

Interesting. I just had mine replaced as well (really impressed with the turnaround time too. Dropped it off on Sunday afternoon at the Apple Store, had it back by Wednesday AM).
I wonder if there's a common issue with the 800 board? Why did you have to get yours repaired? I lost all video on my iBook...

same here! It was showing the most amaising things... dies sometimes, froze some others, etc... I posted something about it 3 weeks ago but noone was obviously conserned!...
Now I can see I am not alone! But sad that such a good machine can DIE so fast! Mine was ... 3 month old!!!
Will it do it again in another 3 months?
I wonder what is the REAL problem there, and if we have any waranty that it will not and if the "mother board" waranty is "extended" as it is new!?!...
Anyone?

I'm not sure if the warranty is extended b/c we had work done, but I'm betting Apple's customer service would be more responsive to some well-placed bithcing b/c we've already had problems. I bought mine the day it was released in November so I did have it longer than your 3 months. But ultimately the video did fail (just went out completely. I had no flickering or anything).
Although I'd assume they'd have figured out what the problem is and repaired it on the replacement boards so we won't have to worry about it. But I'll let you know in 3 months.

The entire computer is warranteed (or parts thereof). Basically, it is promised you will have a working computer or parts for x amount of time.
So, even if they had to replace your logic board 100 times, if the last replacement fails after the warranty expires, they've (the manufacturer, in this case, Apple) already met their obilgation (unless they consider the inconvenience factor).
So, basically, your original purchase is guaranteed to last for a year (unless you purchase Apple Care, in which case it should last for 3).
(Sorry, didn't feel like quoting any of you. BTW, this is all based on Sonnet's warrantee info. I'm assuming it's the same as it implies the least amount of loss from defective parts short of imposing a limit on the number of repairs/replacements)

Isn't that repairs under AppleCare have a 90 day warranty? Theoretically, if you had a repair at the very end of your warranty, you effectively extended it for 2-3 months (in case the same problem returned).

The reliability of Apple's iBook logic boards may be in question. The problem has not just shown it self in 800 mhz iBooks, I have a 700mhz and mine has been replaced twice. First for some kind of video problem were my screen would freeze, then for another were it would turn off as soon as I unplugged it.
I was also impressed by Apple's turn around time and professionalism. And I was very luck that these problems did not become serious until after my law school finals. However with so many problems there may be an issue with reliability of the logic board. Mine is not completely fixed, it still turns off most of the time if I unplug the power from the wall before unplugging from the iBook (or if electricity goes off). I consider this minor and have not attempted to reship to Apple.
I wonder if the problem is related to execissive shaking? For my part, I rode a motorcycle and a bicycle to school during the first 4 months of use and there was a considerable amount of shaking. Since I stopped subjecting the iBook to these vibrations I have not had any more issues.

it's been 2 weeks since i dropped off my iBook. the store hasn't received the new logic board from Apple yet . the service is slower here, i guess .
i'm surprised at how many cases there are of logic board replacement on the iBook800. i lost all my video after plugging in a composite video adapter during sleep mode. the iBook was 2 mos. old, never had a problem, and it was the third or fourth time i used the composite adapter.
i hope this is the last logic board replacement i'll need!
