While the ATI is faster, it doesn't blow nVidia's doors off.

The 9000. It also has better energy conservation & supports vertex shading, which will be useful in the next-gen of games.

If the 9000 is faster, why put the 440 in the 17"?

The 9000 is a lot faster and a generation ahead of the MX. But the most important thing is that the 9000 uses less power when playing games or DVDs. Not sure why Apple is so cheap when it comes to graphics chips.
