i'm using my friends g3 pismo powerbook for a while and i want to use my ipod with it. it's a 10 gig ipod and the pismo only has a 6 gig hard drive. but i do have a 200 gig lacie fw external. is there any way i can keep my itunes folder on the external drive and have the ipod sync up with it? or am i going to have to buy another harddrive for the pismo?

thanks for the help

cheers

iTunes can keep your music whereever you want it. In the Advanced section of the preferences you can set where you iTunes Music Folder is, and you can set it to copy any music you add to the library to that location.

The easiest thing to do, would be to uncheck the "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library." That way you can add all your music to your library from your FireWire drive and it will stay in place and still by synced to your iPod

It should work out fine using the external HD. You can probably direct your iTunes to view/play your mp3s from the external drive, and then when you plug your iPod in, it should revert to the external drive. You may hafta tweak a few settings and change a few pathways of where iTunes sees his music, but with a minor amount of OS X knowledge, you should be able to make it work.

Yup, as noted you can do this.

I have all of my music on a portable external firewire disk. When I need to sync my iPod, I just daisy chain it onto the external firewire disk and everything works flawlessly.

I just wish notebook hard drives would come up to speed (figuratively and literally). They are slow and small in comparison to desktops and, IMO, are one of the principal bottlenecks in speed for many day-to-day activities on a portable.
