So I was messing around with my Desktop picture so that it would change every 5 seconds, and then I decided I didnt like that anymore - so I tried to turn it off, but it wouldnt go away! AHH, I was going crazy, so I tried to log out (I like to see how long I can go without restarts ) but mail wouldnt quit. And so I brought up the force quit window to quit it, and the force quit window got the beachball of death, so finnally I just held down the power button to shut her down. None of that worried me though, one litle problem in the finder can wreak havoc on your system I've noticed.

So what worried me was that my 1Ghz 15" PB would not start up! GASP, I just got a new logic board and Airport card and now my baby wont startup? So I decided to reset the PMU. I held it down for at least 10 seconds, because if you just press it once, it seems like it does nothing. So after about 15 seconds I released it and it started up on its own after that!! I was happy that it started up, but not from reseting the PMU. I've reset that sucker many times and it has never started up the machine.

Anyone ever had their machine not start-up? Or has anyones machine ever booted up after a PMU reset all by itself? I'm not super worried now but if it happens again...

Just an afterthought... Would Apple have changed the logic board so that my new logic board (which is only 3 weeks later in production according to the serial number) PMU acts different? Is this whole thing linked to the FAN SAGA?? So anyone have the same PMU behaviour as me?

Oh and the PMU is the PowerManagementUnit and on my 15" TiBook you can remove the keyboard and press a small button under the eject key to reset it.

when you perform a hard restart, it can sometimes take a few moments for the blue OS X screen to appear, as the OS performs standard disk maintenance.

maybe that was your problem?

I tried for about a minute to get anything on the screen. And the whole time I listened with my ear to the machine and nothing was going on inside. I have done what you are implying though, tried to turn it on when it was already turning on and just turned it off again, but I do not think thats what happened this time.
