Is there any way to turn the PB cooling fan on via software? There are times when I take a break from computing and would really like to turn the fan on high to cool down my power book while I do something else for a few minutes. Is this even theoretically possible, or is the fan solely under hardware control?

No, there is no user initiation of the fan, sorry.

I'm not sure why you would need or want to do this. It's all taken care of automatically. If the machine was too hot, the fans would turn on on their own. If you want your machine to cool down because of external case temperature, just put it to sleep.
