A week ago I was sure I wanted a new iPod. But not getting the coolness quotient, my soon-to-be wife pointed out my current 5 gigger isn't yet completely full. It got me to thinking.
What would be more useful would be a portable. I'd love to be able to write my column from a coffee shop or sit in my parents' living room during a visit and catch up on correspondence.
I can't afford a slick new PowerBook, but every time I'm at my favourite coffee shop, I see people with the old school Pismo ones.
What's the minimum feature-set I could get away with, running OS X and MS Office at a reasonable clip? I don't necessarily need to watch DVDs or care about video cards. I just want to do the simple things outlined above.
What do you guys think?
This is my first trip to the PowerBook forum here @ MacNN. Please be nice.

I would look into early TiPBs ... slick old-skool titanium and a faster G4. I loved Pismo and the two battery bays, but most are runnish 400Mhz G3s, which is just to slow ... you will be watching what you typed a few minutes ago in Word X because of the lag.

That's what I was afraid of. If I had a grand or so to spend, I'd pick up a newer iBook. I (rather naively) thought I might be able to pick up a Pismo for the same price as a new iPod. A trip to eBay quickly dispelled that myth.

ok, that's not quite right what was said about the Pismo. Word is able to keep up with typing.
My Pismo configuration (incidentaly, I just upgraded to a 1 Ghz TiBook) is a 400 Mhz G3/640 MB of RAM and a 20 Gig hard drive. Overall performance of the machine with light duty (email, web, word) is certainly fine. It is with the digital lifestyle that it really has fallen behind the times (although I was still able to run iMovie 3 and get some fun out of it).
The Pismo was, and is, a great computer. And if your needs fit into it's capabilities, I say go for it.

I too am happy with my pismo. 400 mhz 320 mg ram 20 gig hd. the only problem I have is the dead lg dvd drive. I am looking to replace it. I am just curious if there are any suggestions for me to replace it. I have an external burner I just want to be able read and watch dvd's. it would also be nice to burn cd's but that would be just an added bonus. I have seen the one reviewed on macnn http://reviews.macnn.com/review.php?id=33 but I can not seem to find it for that price anymore anywhere. I am trying to keep my pricerange around 150-200 american. I am also comfortable tearing my old one apart in order to install a different drive. aesthetics are not an issue either. thanks.
