OK I was hoping not to be one of the poor bastards on these forums who get a crapped out ibook within the first few weeks of getting one but...

My trackpad and the button are totally useless now. I can only use the mouse. The trackpad and button died right as I booted up on the install cd. I reformatted the system and re-installed as I was about to do anyway and then rebooted on my HD and still the trackpad is dead.

What is the better course of action-Wait and see if this is an issue with the new ibooks or send it back and hope that Apple doesn't scratch and bang the heck out of it.

I am damned if I do and damned if I don't!!!
iFinished therefore iBook!

One thing to check: Go to the Mouse pane in System Preferences and click on the "Trackpad" tab. See if you have the "Ignore Trackpad When Mouse Is Present" option checked.
Other than that, I'd go ahead and send it to Apple. If it's defective, they'll fix it for you. No sense waiting; and you most certainly should do it before the warranty (1 year) is up.
