I know I posted this under someone elses topic but I thought the right people may not be seeing it so I am going to repost it.
I am looking for a replacement to my long gone LG DVD drive. It died a while ago and I have given up on it ever working again. I am though looking for a replacement to this drive. I had seen some posts about ones that are less than $200. that would be great. I am not going to be too picky and want cd burning too but it would be nice. if anyone knows of any place that offers this. also I am not worried about loosening some screws and cobbling a few things. I am comfortable doing that sort of thing. thank you.

this won't be that much help, but i know there are drives out there...
i've even seen a combo drive (dvd/cdrw) for the pismo.

so...try a google search, try "pismo cd drive"
at
www.google.com/mac

good luck!

I read the review referenced some time ago and went looking for the unit. MCE knew nothing about it. MCE does sell an expansion bay unit but the price is $299 not $170 as in the review.

I contacted MCE about this story months ago and they said that they would NEVER sell this combo drive to the public at $170 and that the part # listed in the article is even incorrect. And that if they did sell just the guts they could not guarantee the drive would work and there are no refunds.

So is Brad wrong?

I say no but MCE is in the business of selling dives so why would they sell it for cheaper than they could? It seems Brad had good intentions about the info in this article (thanks Brad) but MCE says different.

I did see iBook combo drives on e-bay but the modification to get them to work is an expensive risk....but i'm up for it.

Just so you know the link to MCE was put up by MacNN editors, not me. In fact I don't know what MCE sells. I've written to the editors of MacNN to change this but they haven't responded. I would say call pbparts.com, call Toshiba, look online...the drive is out there somewhere!

Have you tried Wegenermedia (www.wegenermedia.com)? They are selling combo drives for $299.99 with a $40 rebate on your old drive, even dead. It looks like they found a mechanism that fits perfectly with the pismo.

I think the MCE drive is overpriced. I thought about going with wegener but decided to wait until my LG dies also. If you are adventuresome, you might try to find out the brand they use and install it yourself (to save money).
