I'm probably purchasing a laptop later in the summer and I hope to use it for listening to music (I'll be moving overseas for awhile and I want to bring as little as possible aside from clothes, etc). Does the iBook have good sound? I'm by no means an audiophile -- right now my primary "sound system" is a pair of decent speakers on my computer for listening to MP3s. Will the iBook fulfill my needs?

i have no problem with the ibook's speakers. i am not going to lie, they are no amazing speakers, but they do get the job done fine for me. and if you find them horrible then just pack a small pair of earbud headphones and plug them into the ibook.
but i am sure the speakers will be ok for you

The iBook's speakers are pretty decent for as far as speakers the size of small tweeters go. You won't get any bass, and they sound a little tinny, but they're good for laptop speakers.

They're good enough for small laptop speakers. Headphones or other speakers that you may want to plug in will work just fine. That's pretty much the case with (almost) every laptop on the market.

Thanks for all your replies, guys, but I it looks like I didn't specify my question enough. Whoops!
What I really meant to ask was how does the iBook sound when hooked up to a decent pair of computer speakers. I have a pretty good pair hooked up to my desktop PC and the sound, as far as I'm concerned, is quite good. My soundcard is a SoundBlaster PCI and it does a fine job of playing MP3s. Does the iBook have comparable or better sound?
On a related note, what about the PowerBook?
Thanks again,
Mike

The iBook sounds fine when hooked up to other speakers. The thing that will make the most difference is the quality of the speakers you're hooking up. I've run music from my iBook to the home stereo and been very happy with how they've sounded.

You know how everbody was raving about how the 12" Powerbook has speakers that bounce the sound off of the screen? Well, the iBook can too! Just play some music and angle the screen facing down towards the keyboard. Sounds different when you are reclining away from you iBook (as opposed to being directly above it).
Sorry, I just wanted to mention this, and this thread just happened to have the appropriate title.

When the iBook is connected to external speakers it will sound very nice, in fact I am looking into buying a set of JBL Creatures for mine.
Oh btw, when playing DVD's the sound is quite quiet from the built in iBook speakers.
