Hello everyone,
I have tried to install classic on my powerbook 12, with no luck.
is this the stuff not possible? When I got it, I immediately wiped & partioned the drives, I have classic on my G4 desktop, just didn't think I'd need it on my laptop.
I have the 9.2 disk (or whatever the last version was. I know you can't (or supposedly can't) boot into 9, I just want to be able to run in classic mode under X
what do I need to do?
Jason

Jason,
Pop your install disk into your Powerbook and install the Applications installer that will reside in your Utilities folder. Once installed you have the options on the CD to install other Applications, Developer Tools, and Classic. Remember that new Powerbooks do not boot into OS9, but will only run Classic.

If you can get your hands on a classic "System Folder" on a different machine, you could simply drag it onto yours. If all the files are copied correctly, your machine will recognize the classic system just fine.
However, with your 12", you should have received the sys 9 install disks. Most of my clients that bought theirs have them. Oddly, there was not one in my PB 17" box.

You should not have an OS9 install disk with your 17" Powerbook because you can't take an OS9 CD and install on your Powerbook. Your installation disk that came with your Powerbook will installl Classic on your computer. All new machines after January with the exception of educational purchases I believe, will not boot into OS9. They will only run Classic with comes on your Software and Restore CD.
*edited by Peter because I was condensending in original post.

Hi Peter KG,
Thanks for the info there. I'm responsible for probably 300 machines, many macs, many windows. The seven 12" powerbooks we just received all came with additional install disks which I believe allowed you to install classic by itself as well as OS X. And yes, not a bootable OS 9 CD, since, as you said, the new machines are incapable of doing. But since I don't have them in front of me, I can't say for sure.
The 17" I just received came with a single CD. And without using something like pacifist, there is no way to install classic by its lonesome.
I have had issues where, after installing OS X on a client, I have had to pull a System 9 folder from a machine over the network, at which point the client I'm on "sees" that classic folder.
That was my recommendation to rustyclockwork (fun name! ).
I'm not sure you meant to be condescending, but you kind of came across that way. I'm not offended or angry in the least, but if you're not that type of person, you might want to consider how you post things. If you are that type of person, well then, you've succeeded!

That's an install DVD, not a CD--it has all the files you need on it.

Hi wanderlust,
I apoligize the way I posted. I did not mean to be condesending to you. My 12" Powerbook came with (1) Software Install and Restore. The disk includes Classic. (2) Apple Hardware Test (3) Quickbooks. Reading the original posters comments leads me to believe he thought OS9 could be installed as it always has been prior to the non-bootable machines. I didn't want to confuse him.
