I wonder what exactly Xbench's OpenGL test includes. It suggests the 17" AluBook with GF4Go 440 is faster than the 15" TiBook with Radeon 9000.

In contrast, real world UT2003 testing suggests performance is quite similar.

This is from the UT2003 performance thread:
Code:
17" AluBook 1.0 GHz vs. 15" TiBook 1.0 GHz ========================================== 17" GeForce4Go 440 15" Radeon 9000 M Flyby - Antalus 52.6 55.7 Flyby - Asbestos 66.5 67.3 Flyby - Citadel 43.7 41.6 Flyby - Total 162.8 164.6 Botmatch - Antalus 14.6 13.4 Botmatch - Asbestos 22.0 20.8 Botmatch - Citadel 14.5 15.4 Botmatch - Total 51.1 49.6 Total 213.9 214.2

Not much. I use the PC for the rare time now that I do game.

The 17" vs 15" test is a good illustration of the fact that the most recent 3D FPS shooters are terribly CPU limited on our Macs.

You need a 1.4+ GHz PPC970 just to play games.

Exactly.

In IMG's preview of the Radeon 9700 and other video cards, they mention how processor limited gaming on a mac is. the fps just don't get any higher at lower resolutions with beefier video cards...

I'm surprised at those results though. I would have thought that the 167 mhz system bus would give the 17" a bit of an edge in gaming over the TiBook.. i guess not?

I assume those numbers are in frames per second?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

The TiBook has a faster graphics chip so the faster system bus makes no difference.

Sort of. It's the benchmark score for their built-in benches. I am not sure how exactly the score is calculated, but it the number is very close to the average fps rate.

If you want the complete numbers, you can check my posts in the UT2003 bench thread.

Yeah, on PC laptops, the Radeon 9000 M often benches a little faster. However, Xbench has it being noticeably slower in OpenGL testing for some reason.

More important though I think is that the game is simply very CPU limited.
