Hello.

In a percentage amount, how much faster would you say a Powerbook G4 processor is than a G3 iBook processor?

0% for daily use. 900mhz iBook may even be faster than 867mhz PB 12". The only significant difference would be in Photoshop or audio/video encoding/decoding.

Are you sure about this? Aren't core components of Mac OS X Altivec-optimized? This would make everyday usage snappier on a G4. However, I upgraded (or downgraded, depending on your preference) to an iBook 700 from a PowerBook DVI 667 and I don't really see any overall speed difference. iTunes importing is a lot slower on the iBook though. With my PowerBook I could easily attain 10x speed but with my iBook I haven't seen speeds over 6x.

I don't think altivec makes that much difference for core OS components (except Quicktime). Quartz Extreme makes a much bigger difference, and both iBooks and PowerBooks now support QE. That's why you won't notice any difference between them... and G3 has a 512k cache running at full processor speed vs 256k (half-speed?) for the G4.

I agree with Pat++

I got to use my friend's 550MHz TiBook the other day. It was dog slow compared to my 700MHz iBook.

I think the graphics chip has a larger influence on perceived speed becaue of Quartz Extreme than the CPU.

Well, not a very fair comparison but my PowerBook G4 1 GHz (with 1 MB L3 cache) and 768 MB RAM whoops the iBook 900 MHz with 640 MB RAM butt in everything. There a major slow down with the PowerBook, but always one with the iBook (for what I use it for). I could not stand going from what I have now to using an iBook full time.

Depends which model, the 12" will most likely not be that much faster whereas the 15" and 17" both have L3 Cache = a lot more speed.
we don't have time to stop for gas
