The overall speed improvment (28%) is greater than the processor speed increase (12.5%). The new FUJITSU HD seems much faster than the old IBM one in the iBook 800.

Yeah, the biggest jump there is in the disk. Makes me want to upgrade mine... Damn Apple for not making the iBook's disk user-upgradeable!

Don't they use exactly the same graphic card? Howcome the big differences in graphic performance?

Maybe cause the 800 isnt running 10.2.6 like the 900? didnt x.2.6 update open gl or something?

ps my iBook has a Toshiba hard disk and with APM Tuner X on max performance I get better scores in x-bench (which by itself gives different scores everytime you run it)

Can't really explain the difference in graphics performance. I also thought the video card's were similar. Perhaps they've changed some other hardware that interfaces with the video card.

The improved hard disk performance is a surprise. I went for the 60G because it only costs another $AUD 100 (Australia dollars) more.

The other difference is the casing. As mentioned elsewhere the new iBook's outer shell is solid white rather than clear with white painted on the inside. The plastic around the keyboard and trackpad is now a bright white rather than a grey and has a rougher texture. The screen hinge now has a white plastic rather than metal cover. Overall I think the new casing looks a bit better and maybe more durable.

I'd be interested how iBook 900 benchmark compares to a 12" powerbook.

I managed to get a copy of APM Tuner X. Unfortunately it won't let me change the settings of the iBook 900/60G's hard drive

It's prob because of your Fujitsu disk not being compatible, my Toshiba disk works fine with it.
btw can you hear the fujitsu's head movement? or is it quiet

The Fujitsu HD is pretty quiet. Probably quieter than the IBM drive in my old iBook 800.

The card is the same, but the Radeon 7500 on the newest iBook has DDR RAM. The older has SDR RAM.

And what do you think, what Quartz and OpenGL score would mean a snappy (I mean really snappy) OS X feeling in menues, open/close windows, etc? I don't mean photoshop stuff, I only need a system that responds fast.

They're pretty easy to upgrade, actually. I could walk you through it.

Hey,

From what i've read.

1) The ibook is based on the 'G3' old powerbook - hence the xbench name of 'powerbook'.

2) overall score is the very first number at the top of the xbench output.

3) higher is better.

The test seem to vary quite a bit. I have an 800 with only 384 memory and got a 52 score. I think it is funny that when you submit your score, they compare your score against a dual 1g machine instead of something similar.
