For the 2nd time in six weeks my 800mhz/12"/combo drive iBook sits at a local repair shop awaiting a new logic board. The first time it died, it was less then 3 months old. Now it's died again a short time later and left me laptop-less. What is the deal?
At least it waited until now as opposed to anytime in the last three weeks when I had four final papers to work on but still. This is ridiculous.

Just wondering, when did you buy your laptop?
My 800 combo is/would have been 6 months old now, but it is off for replacement. What exactly went wrong with your iBook?

I bought it the first weekend of January. As for what exactly went wrong, the screen started getting lines across on start up and if I was able to get into the desktop it would freeze at random.

Hmmm, that's extremly unusual. I've had my 800 since last Nov, and have never had a problem. Either you're unbelievably unlucky, or the problem isn't coming from your logic board, but rather some other component which is causing your logic board to grill- although I wouldn't know what because there basically isn't much besides the logic board itself.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's all that unusual. The 800 iBooks seem to have a logic board issue. Although I would have hoped that b/c CrazedVW had it replaced once, it wouldn't break again.

We talk about it there!...

I (we) got the same problem and same solution : logic board changed...

I am not so cool about myu iBook now if you say that it died 3 weeks after... I bought mine exacly in the same time as yours and it has been changed 2 weeks ago...

One week left??? :o/

i had logic board problem with 700. and was told to be one of 1500 unlucky july-produced ibooks ...

another issue could be simply the screen. the cables behind that can be disturbed and it may look like logic board issue.

No, I thought at first that it was the screen too but the entire laptop froze and I don't think cables to the screen would cause that.

I had the exact same problem with my iBook/800 a few months ago and had the logic board replaced -- has worked great since!

Same problem for me, too. ( ... lines across the screen, etc ... ) with the iBook 800.

Hope it's not too obvious to say that a "logic board problem" is vague. The repair facilities probably do not do board level repairs. I had a new PB5300 with a bad external SCSI port and the solution was a logic board replacement.

The solution for my iBook was a logic board and keyboard replacement. Additionally the trackpad to logic board cable was broken. That was originally not considered to be a warranty repair until I disputed that since I have never opened the case or upgraded the machine.

WTF !! I have just gone throught the same problem too!

My ibook 700 (which i got in May last year). Lines accross the screen then froze up (and couldn't reset).

But how is this for Bizzare:

First the screen and and the motherboard were replaced - but for some reason the sceen was dead on arrival so another one was sent done. Thankfully this was all done at a local repair shop within about 2 weeks....but wait theres more

So it all worked fine for a few days after getting it back but then it did the same problem...lines across the screen and froze up!!
So I take back to the repair shop and am told the new motherboard was also faulty! So that too got replaced.

So within about 3 weeks my little ibook700 (which has never had an other problems) has gone through 2 screens and 2 motherboards.

Bye the way that was about a month ago and it all seems fine now (although i do occasionally get screen lines and a partial freeze up when opening some classic programs - but fixes with a force quit of that program so not really a problem)

At least it was all repaired for free under waranty, i didnt lose any data, and it was done relatively quickly - imagine how long it could have taken if was sent away each time!

hi !

there CLEARLY is a problem with ibooks !!
my screen died 2 days ago !
Everything was perfectly ok since 6 months (the date i bought it) then, yesterday, the ibook crashed like you (total freeze) then after a reboot i noticed grey/black lines in the right of the screen (and crash again).
I noticed that the angle of the screen makes my ibook freeze !
after 10 min testing, the screen died totally, the ibook boots normally (i hear sound, HD and can ssh it...) but the screen is dead

i just called Apple, here in France, it is under warranty and will be repaired (logic board replacement i think)

i fear alot that, after reading what you all say, the problem reappear in 6 months, when warranty is finished !!!

what do you think ? we should all warn apple that this problem happen even after logic board replacement, warranty extension ?
it seems to be linked to the new Radeon 7500 (older ibook doesn"t suffer from this prob)

May I join the club. My iBook's (12" 700 combo, bought june 2002) display went dead today.... funny lines first, then completely dark. After 15 minutes I managed to get my display back, but then flickering and again dark...

I think it was a wise decision to buy Applecare 2 weeks ago...
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

Please see my forum (just added) reguarding logics boards. I am wondering if additional displays effect these systems.
