I'm trying to dial an ISP from my PB17 to T68i but every time I dial the number I get the dialogue box saying 'no carrier detected'. In the Network Sys prefs the modem chosen for USB Bluetooth Modem Adaptor Ericsson Infrared V110. Surely this is the problem?

The setup differs slightly from carrier to carrier.
Here is a page that gives various config information:
http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html
My GPRS settings to communicate with the phone (T68i/P800) via bluetooth for AT&T in the US are:
Modem set to Ericsson T39 19.2
PPP Dial telephone # set to *99#,
Works like a charm. Connect speed is always reported to be 2400 baud but it is erroneous. The connect speed is more like 80Kbit/s

I'm still confused but will keep trying. I wanted to dial an ISP or AOL via the phone and thought I just dial the regular number I would using the internal modem.

What carrier are you on? Some carriers (such as T-Mobile) allow you to use the phone as a modem and dial into your own ISP. As I recall that is called CDPD. Other carriers, such as AT&T, do not allow you to do CDPD and you have to use GPRS to connect to the internet.
The upshot is that on certain carriers, you have to configure your setup to use your GPRS provider as your ISP. AT&T is one of these. Dialing to your own ISP won't work.

I just stuck a Cingular SIM into my T68i. I've tried just dialing up the regular way but the system here is weird. I'm from the UK and just moved to LA.
So here's the details. My number is a 310 area code. The ISP is a 213 area code. Do I have to add something extra? I tried adding 1 to the beginning but that made no difference.
I just need someone to take me through this one step at a time, the way it should be done. Thanks.

I just did a quick Google and it looks like Cingular does support CDPD. I am not familiar at all with their setup (I use AT&T and they are all a bit different..) so someone else will need to help from here I am afraid.

Little off topic, but I just wanted to second that PB 17" using Bluetooth with AT&T and t68i works very well connecting to internet from anywhere. No problems.
The computer is not actually dialing out using a number. It is just connecting to AT&Ts GPRS system using the phone's modem.
For those interested, the details are here:
