I would post pics but I have nowhere to host them. A freind was using my machine and he stupidly forced the entire disply down so that it was laying horizontal. Both of the mounts that connect the hindes to the display are broken off. This is a five month old 1ghz and Im scared to death. I have applecare. I called my local apple retailer and they told me to bring it down to see if it would be "cost effective" to even repair. Should I call apple?

AppleCare will not cover this. You will have to pay Apple's flat-rate repair.
If you have homeowner's/renter's insurance, check your policy to find out if you have computer coverage. The repair cost is likely above your deductible.
Notebook computers should ALWAYS be insured.

Yeah. They won't cover that under AppleCare. Insurance is your only recourse.

How old is your computer and did you buy it with a credit card? I know my credit card company (MBNA) insures purchases against such things for 90 days from the date of purchase. It might be worth looking into. Good luck.

Read the original post. Five months, a bit out of the usual Credit Card warranty protection.

Really, really bad. So sorry, apple care will not cover it, since the break of both hinges in one instance points out to abuse (force). But you´re (kinda....sorry not meant ironically) lucky since the hinges broke at the display. Means: you only have to replace the screen unit, the core hinge mechanics seems to be allright. The hinge and the base unit enclosure can be retained.

I'd really break both of your friend legs, and them make him pay the repair.

Congrats, your friend owes you 800 dollars.
That's the cost of the screen with hinges.
People have repaired broken screen hinges like this in the past using aluminum and epoxy, but really, it's a new machine. If you have no insurance, and your friend isn't ponying up cash, sell the base of the machine and buy another new one, or buy a good screen off a damaged base unit, and mix and match.
Good luck.

Same thing happened to me, although it was not your friend that did it! .
I was quoted $1100 from Apple. It was out of AppleCare as well, not that that would have mattered. That was when I finally decided to get the 17".
Really sucks. I feel for you.

Local computer store quoted me at $1300 total. Either my freind, his parents, or his parents homeowners policy (if applicable under liabilty) will be paying for it.

SafeWare insurance for $100.
Wait a month or so.
File a claim.
Of course, I am saying to NOT do this.
Would be replaced though.

Safeware, eh?
What about the fact that it would have been repaired NOT by Apple? Or does Apple repair it -- paid for via Safeware?
All I can say is you need to get a better class of friends in the intelligence level. I am sitting here with my own 1Ghz Titanium trying to understand HOW in the world someone could actually think that the screen should be horizontal. WHAT was the point of that exercise, anyway?
Good luck, though, guy. Sorry about that.

I had somewhat the same problem with my older 550 Gigabit. The hinges are about 200 bucks a pop and it is best to have someone at a shop install them because apple glues the display to the back of the casing. You MAY not have to buy a whole new screen to have this fixed. But then again I am not sure if there are major differences between my model and yours when it comes to the screen. Of course I didn't get a chance to see the damage so if the screen itself is busted it is gonna hurt the wallet.

Thank you all for the kind words. It seems only fellow Apple owners and the guys at the computer store that can fully relate to what is being delt with. It looks like I may have to go through the kids parents. Im willing to take them to court if I need to but I think I can get them to see whats at hand.

No I find breaking legs way to quick. Feed him slowly into an industrial meat grinder until he comes to see your side of the argument. Hopes this helps

do unto others as they have done to your TiBook...
Take his legs, and pull them apart like he's doing a split until they are horizontal.... don't stop until his hinge breaks.
then step on his nuts and bolts.

Geez. Your friend's nuts!
Actually, it's quite a bad idea to lend your machine to people to use....... I try not to let my iBook out of my sight if I ever let someone to use it for a while.
Anyway, good luck on replacing it

I'm sorry. This happened to my TiBook aswell. It would cost me at least a new iBook to cover it.
Fortunally it was a work machine, so I could just keep the base. It now forms the center of my digital hub, playing movies, music, videos, emulates C64, SNES, NES, Sega etc with a GamePad out to a huge projector screen.
I've been using my G4 400 desktop (tricked out majorly) in the meantime and I haven't been that horribly off. The final tear-stopper is getting my 17" PowerBook on friday. I had to pay for it my self (well, me and my girlfriend really), but it will be worth every cent as it should be a lot more sturdy.
Your friend should definitly pay for the repairs though as it's a new 1Ghz TiBook we're talking about here... perhaps you can offer to sell him the base (just plug in an external monitor and he'll have a nice compact mac ) and buy yourself an AlBook.

Ugh... that's a rough visual to wake up to in the morning, I almost sprayed coffee all over my AlBook.

Uh oh, another 17" with a damaged screen that AppleCare won't cover.

12" actually... but I didn't, I was able to redirect the spray elsewhere. Needless to say, my cat probably won't be very happy with me for a while.

If you dropped it, then you really have no choice. Apple considers that to be Accidental damage/Abuse. They will not cover dropped machines under warranty or Applecare. Sorry.
You might be able to find someone to replace the internal display sub-frame though. But, expect to pay for 3 hours of labor (at about $100 /hr), plus the cost of the sub-frame which is about $150. Best case scenario, it'll cost you about $450 and cosmetically it will probably never look as good as it did before you dropped it. Taking apart the LCD display on a TiBook is harder than on the AlBooks or iBooks, and the metal "skin" tends to bend and warp much more easily when you're disassembling them. You only other recourse is to replace the entire display, which depending on which TiBook you have, will cost you $700-1000+ plus 2 hours of labor.
