Anyone have some easy and cheap solutions for cleaning my iBook 12 " 700 screen? Does it really take the store bought cleaning product?
Also, does anyone have suggestions about a CD tray that won't open? It just clicks 3-4 times and stays shut. If I push F12 and then push in on the tray at just the right time, it will come out. Sounds like a latch or something simple that is stuck, and would rather not spend big bucks to get it fixed. I believe I can still buy extended Apple Care for another few weeks.
Thanks!

Just use Windex, anybody that trys to tell you it is harmful is full of ****. I have had more than enough laptops and LCD displays to know that.

I know that the klear screen product is expensive but I've used it for about a year on both my laptops and my NEC 17" LCD and I think it is an outstanding product, easily worth the money. Your computer is just too expensive to take chances with.

If you can still buy an AppleCare extended warranty, that means the warranty provided with the computer is not out of time yet. I'd recommend AppleCare because it's a laptop, but you won't have to spend any money to get it fixed if it's under warranty. Just call Apple and they'll tell you where the nearest service provider is.

I use klear screen and it's fantastic. I'm half way through a 10 dollar bottle after 1 year. And I use it to clean CD's too. Is taking the chance of screwing up the most expensive part of your computer worth 7 bucks?

The best and cheapest way to clean the LCD screen is to use water. Just dry the screen carefully after. It will be perfect, and it's free.

Dilute 1 part vinegar with 2 parts water, and you can clean the screen with no streaks. It works really well and it's cheap. Try it, you'll like it.

Dude, you are mental if you use Windex on an LCD. The ammonia in it will eat through window tint! I get people in my detailing shop all the time who have worn down tint - when asked, they tell me "I even clean it religiously with Windex!" Um yeah, that's your problem.
A damp, lint-free cloth will take care of the display. Windex will eat the hell out of it - not right away, but it will damage the display. No question.

Prove it.
(From Windex bottle: Cleans glass, plastic, enamel...)
An LCD is nothing more than glass costed with plastic.

If you want to use Ammonia to clean an LCD, go ahead. I'm sure steel wool will get mud off your car too. It will take the shine out of the LCD screen, and deteriorate & dissolve it's protective coating over time. Check the hundreds of hits you'll get on Google looking for info on it.
Seems a waste to use something that may damage the screen, when a damp cloth is completely adequate for the task.

Wow, some strong opinions on how to best clean the screen! I have been too afraid to try anything but a soft dry cloth. I admit the Apple's product is amazing, my screen looked brand new when I tried a sample. However, $25 is just too much money! If I could but it cheaper somewhere else...
BTW, I don't think cleaning with a damp cloth is the best solution either. Because as you probably have seen when cleaning mirrors, water leaves ugy streaks behind. It may be safe, but not ideal.

Yeah, but most people use paper towel on the mirrors... and then you do get the nasty streaks.
I have a little cloth I got for sunglasses. I just dampen it, squeeze the excess water out, and wipe it down in a circular motion. I don't have a problem with streaks.
But yeah, this little discussion has some flame war potential, eh?

As far as I know, the klear screen is the product recommended and sold by Apple. I think it is a lot cheaper from an Apple dealer or somewhere else. I paid about $14 a my local Apple dealer for the 2 oz. bottle, 3 cloths and 2 presoaked "instant" cloths. That should easily last a few years.

Just water with a very soft paper towel or tissue will do. Use one wet one and one dry one afterwards, and make sure you get rid of all the streaks with the dry one.
