As I'm surfing right now my PB17 has started to make some seriously weird sound from somewhere near the power socket. Not a low buzzing or anything but like it's trying to digest a meal or something. Lasted a few minutes.

I don't know which particular sound you are referring to, but if it is different from the normal sizzling keyboard sound, I had the same problem. I thought my sizzling had become magnitudes worse, and I started to worry a little. So, I unplugged everything and the sound went away. Turns out it had to do with my USB devices/hub. It didn't come back when I plugged everything back in, so I assume it was just weird circuit feedback or something. Hasn't happened since.

No, this is definitely a fan or something in or around the power supply area and gets loud when the system heats up.

Yeah I agree it's the fan. It starts on my 17'' everytime the Ge Force is put to good use (e.g. when playing Unreal, or when some screen savers kick in).
