I have to swallow my pride. 20 years with Macs, I do a lot, including pro digital photography. Have the wonderful 1Ghz TiBook with Superdrive, and can't figure this out. When I put the DVDR, (the one that came with the TiBook), iDVD opens, but the disk does not appear on the desktop. So I can't drag and drop. There's an 'Import photos" but it won't select a folder, just 1 at a time. The help is USELESS. I know it must be simple....help I'm a dope!! Thanks....Peter

Hi Peter,

I think the simplest solution would be to open the CD/DVD preference pane and change "When you insert a blank DVD" choose either "open in finder" or "ask what to do". That way the DVD will (or can, with your choosing) mount on the desktop (provided you have that preference indicated in your finder prefs).

Once this is done, the disk is readied and you can drag all of the photos you want to place on the disk just like any other drive. Once you're satisfied with its new contents, drag the icon of the DVD to the trash (it will change to the "Burn Disk" icon). Drop the DVD icon onto that "Burn Disk" icon and it'll will immediately start to burn the contents into the DVD for you.

So, I just burned a DVDR full of images...great. question #2 When I dragged the folders to the disk, all images were "copied" and this took the same sort of time to copy to a CF card, disk, whatever. I thought, "I guess I'll just be able to eject when done, they must have changed the protocol", but no, I still had to take it to the trash/burn icon and go through the expected slow burn. I didn't expect the initial "copy" time. I thought it'd be like toast where indexing the session is instantaneous, just drag the folders and the content appears, then you burn the CD. Why the double wait? Just curious....Peter

Apple's disc burner actually creates a disc image when you insert a blank disc. The icon you see on the desktop is really the disc image, not the disc itself. So you have to wait for the files to copy to the disc image, and then again for the disc image to be burned to the disc. The advantage of this method is that it provides an easy drag and drop, WYSIWYG way for novice users to burn discs. The disadvantage, of course, is the double wait time.

The way to get around the double wait is to use Toast (it burns DVDs, too.) Just put everything you want burned in a folder, set it up the way you want it, drop the folder on Toast 5, and tell it to burn the DVD.

ibookuser- thanks! I have toast5, didn't know it burned DVD's. So, if Toast sees a DVDR, it treats it like a CD, or does it ask for a "new dvd" where it otherwise asks for a CD. I don't see anywhere in it's menus to add a DVD, that's why I thought it didn't burn DVD's. Ah, the addled brain at work......Peter

There is a DVD option, I think in "other". It's in the instructions anyway.
