I recently aquired a fine PowerBookG3 Series, 250MHz, 160MB RAM, 1998 vintage. This is the first G3 PowerBook, after the original PBG3 that wasn't anything more than a 3400+G3Chip.
anyway, I successfully installed Mac OS X (and it doesn't run painfully, so I'm leaving it) ...

well, I have a G4 sharing my iNet connection, and it is the same setup I use with my iBook and every other "client computer" that I plug into the lan ...

So here's my problem, first boot, iNet works on the PBG3, second boot, no more inet, it doesn't get an IP (DHCP), after a while it auto-assigns itself a 169.xxx IP, then it looses it as though it wasn't plugged, then it assigns it again.
Third boot, the same, fourth, the same ... so here I am. This also happened before I formatted the drive and installed OS X (it had 9.1) previously).

I tried zapping the PRAM, cleaning the Ethernet port on the computer, several cat5 cables ... nothing

So my thought is that the NIC in the PB is fried or something ... is there a way to diagnose this ?

Any ideas, anyone ?

Thx

The only way I can think of to check this connection is to continuously try to make an Apple Personal File Sharing connection between that machine and another. Transfer files, or link programs, play games, just see if the connection is always 'on' and working.

I think however that it may be a problem with sharing your connection. I've had problems trying to share my internet connection here with several computers, and basically what its come down to is I cant do it for some reason with the way my ISP provides the cable modem service.

I dont know what iNet is, but I'm guessing either DSL or Cable modem service. So can you plug your G3 all by itself into the connection? Skip any hubs or sharing and see if that works. If so, then maybe you are limited to the number of computers you share your connection with. With my ISP, I get two IP addresses, other than that I have to try and find a way to share the connection without using another IP. When you mean sharing do you mean each computer has its own IP, or one computer is providing access for another computer. Can you give a little more detail on your set-up?
