I have a iBook 700 and as of Friday night, my trackpad is sporatically working or not working upon boot up.
I have tried multiple set ups - with power cord, without power cord, with mouse, without mouse.
So far:
- plugging in a USB mouse has always worked
- the night after it didn't work (it was on batteries), I plugged it in the next morning - it worked. I rebooted, still worked.
- ran the Hardware test cd - found no problems. Althougth it was pretty hard to navigate without a pointing device - USB mouse wouldn't work.
- Last night I booted up - didn't work. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled OS X - it works.
I am going home right now and will try it out. However, I am figuring it probably just needs to be sent in. Doesn't anyone know where the Power Management reset is on an iBook? A friend said I might need to reset.

if you look at the connection on the logic board where the trackpad cable plugs into it does it look like the 4 or 5 connecters that are soldered to it are loose? if so, i have seen this before and it was fixed by replacing the logic board. it is a HUGE expense for the fix, but i was told that was the only "safe" way to fix the problem. if it is re-soldered then you run the risk of setting the temperature too high on the soldering gun and damaging more of the logic board.

Well, then it would be hardware... which then it would be covered by AppleCare, no?

Yes and No.
Apparently this is not a part covered by warranty.
However, if you have not opened the case, inserted an Airport card, or upgraded the RAM, then you have a good case. This shouldn't apply to just removing the keyboard, since that's one place to find the serial number.
Based on personal experience, if the machine goes in for repair and they find the trackpad to logic board cable broken, they will call you and tell you that this repair is not covered by warranty.
You can call back and dispute that it is not covered by warranty. You should then be transferred to a Customer Service representative, who will probably tell you the reasons it is not a warranty repair and how the cable could have been damaged. If you then explain that you have not done anything that could have damaged the cable and if that is true I would expect them to authorize the repair.
