Through my work I have an opportunity to purchase a 15" powerbook 1Ghz w/ superdrive for $1,799. I know you all have many opinions on TiBooks so I am interested in your advice on this.
Listed below are the specs of the machine in question. The set up is straight from Apple, but it may help clear up any confusions.
Thanks, ryan

I paid $3000 for this same unit back in November. It is a solid machine.

I work at a large university and apple is running a special promotion for us. It involves bulk buying across the university.
I think it is a great deal, but after browsing this forum the past few days it seems there are quite a few unhappy people. $1,800 is still quite a bit of money so I became slightly concerned.
I am planning on purchasing this machine (they are also offering the 867 15" for $1,499 and the 12" for $1,399 -- no 17") but i wasn't sure if I should be wary of the machine (no the deal).
thanks again

People are unhappy on this forum because things have gone wrong and they come here to see how they might fix it. Many, many others (in fact, most likely the majority of PB 15" owners who have never posted here) are happy. Couple months ago I bought almost the same machine as the one you're looking at, and it's just a wonderful. I take it everywhere--no problems. Everything works great. As iDORK said, it's solid.
I think if *insert super-hero here* had one, all of his evil counterparts would just have given up because, let's face it, *said super-hero* would be even badder than he/she already is--if that's even possible.

Best machine I have ever owned!!!
As in the previous post people only usually post on here if they have a problem. Why talk for no reason about how great the machine is (unless asked )

A 1GHz TiBook for $1800 is a definite "must buy". I have a 12" PB, but I'd jump all over the chance to buy a 15" at that price. Then I'd give it to my GF and get some incredible nookie for the next 6 months (or longer). What a bargain!

Allow me to jump on the "Go for it!" bandwagon. I recently bought a new 800 Mhz Powerbook for about the same price you mention and still think that was an incredible deal. (well, the free three-year warranty helped, too ! I've previously owned a Cube, a clamshell and a white iBook, and this is by far my favorite Mac. Adding a better video card with more RAM, a Superdrive, a bigger hard drive, and a faster processor all for the same price....Definitely a good deal!

The worst case is that you buy it and don't like it. You can easily get $2500 or more for it on eBay or on the boards here. The resale value is excellent, so you'd end up profiting from your trial.

Absolutely, that is a *killer* deal to say the least. You must too remember that people that have issues with their machines run to the forums first to complain, but the thousands upon thousands of satisfied customers have no need to complain. So for every 1 problem you may see, there's hundreds of problem-free machines. Get it, that deal is insane.

I'd say go for it (I did ) I recently picked up a TiBook 1Ghz SD for 2099 out the door.
You still need to pay tax on the 1799 no? If not, that is a *KILLER* deal.
I like my TiBook just fine - so I dont think that should be a reason not to get it... the OSX Finder on the other hand - i cant say too much about that

If I was a PC user I would still buy it and not open it and re-sell it, thats a great deal. Mine was about $5000 CDN with tax and AppleCare. Speaking of which, make sure you buy ApplCare!!!
One reason that it is a solid book, is that its at the end of its product cycle. Sure there were some fan problems, but most problems from the earlier models were worked out - flaky firewire, chipping paint. We still dont know about any long term problems with the new PowerBooks, we have to wait and see.
This machine is definatly a good investment.

Excellent price. Go for it, the 15" rocks.
However: The price for the 12" is a great deal as well and the 12" is a machine worth looking at. While slower, with a smaller screen with a lesser graphics card it is of better build quality (IMO) with a far superior keyboard and the latest technology build in, like airport extreme and bluetooth. The small size comes in very handy when traveling - at home you could use a flat screen should you prefer a larger screen.
But whatever you do, you can't lose out. As somebody already said these things have fantastic resale value.
Best of luck with your decision.

My campus store has a promotion on 12-inch PowerBooks for $1,599, including AppleCare...but NO deals on the 15s! I asked just the other day and they are at the standard edu price. If I could get a SuperDrive Ti for $1,799 I'd buy it in a heartbeat, and wait out the first generation of aluminum models while the bugs are dealt with. Buy, buy, buy!

That computer is well worth more than 1800 and IS the best portable, if not the best Mac ever made (IMO). In fact, that's less than the Apple Employees get with the quarterly promos. Are you sure it's not the 867MHz version below?
PowerBook 867MHz (15.2" TFT)
- 256MB SDRAM - 1 SO DIMM
- 40GB Ultra ATA drive
- Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
- Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
- 15.2-inch TFT Display
$1,799.00

I'd say go for it NOW.

I thought it was a good deal when I ordered mine, at $2,299 before AppleCare.

Definitely go for it, my university (Stanford) has run the same deal recently, might be having it at the moment as well. If anything, I think you are safer with a 15" rather than a 12" or a 17". The 15" underwent many revisions and as far as I know, other than random problems evidenced on the forums, there are really no widespread major issues left (never mind that I own an 800 and my roomate owned a 400 and 550 without any problems either).
Buy one for you and all your friends!

definitely buy it, i just ordered one today for $2200 and i feel like i got a great deal. for $1800 thats an amazing deal, youd be stupid to pass it up.
the first revisions of apples laptop line usually have issues, the tibook is a proven platform that has been perfected for 2 years.

Yeah, go for it!
I got my Titanium 1ghz SD model about 2 months ago, for (with todays currency rates $1484, and I am extremely happy with it!!
It has been a fantastic machine. The screen is amazing (compared to every crt I have seen), the portability is sweet (FCP at home, and FCP at uni... ahh the life). Wireless internet around the home is great with it (and around uni). I am convinced it was the right choice - the 12" is just too tiny (screen size/res) for my needs, and the 17" is too bulky (in machine size), so I really feel the 15" is the sweet spot for me - and for more than $1300 off retail, I wasn't complaining
Weigh up your options. The 12" seems to have quite a few build quality problems - all the 15's i have seen are perfect (this is a lot - dell computers are a very rare around my uni - powerbooks all the way!). The 17" is too big for many people (never mind buying an off the shelf "laptop backpack" that will fit it; your choice line up is much smaller). Waiting for the Al15.4 might interest you, but with a lower res screen (reportedly 1280x800 to fit in line with the 16:10 movement apple is making with their lcd's), and no speed boost soon (not until the 17" is boosted, and the 17 still only started shipping not that long ago, an update for it is ways off), its tough to go with the Al - particularly with such a fantastic discount you have been offered!
$1000 discount is in the ballpark of $300 less than apple's staff discount typically on powerbooks. And a heck of a lot more than apple's edu discount.
BUY

I'll sell you the same machine with a full 1 GB RAM for the exact same price, and I'll pick up shipping. No tax either, obviously.
I have a six-week old, flawless condition (no cosmetic blemishes whatsoever, no dead/stuck pixels, etc.) that I'm looking to sell. I have all original packaging and documentation.
Email me at "jeff@is300.net" or reply here if interested.
Serious inquiries only, please.
