New to MACs. Having problem viewing simple mpegs on the internet. Do I always have to save it to a document or desktop just to view a simple file. Every time I try to view an mpeg it prompts me to save. I just want to view it. What am I doing wrong? Also some mpegs open into text formats. Do I need additional software like Realplayer or is Quicktime suffecient?

What browser are you using?

If your not using Safari, I suggest you switch to it. www.apple.com/safari

This is the browser Apple is engineering and is very fast compared to the alternatives.

I suggest you get Safari before trying to diagnose any settings problems with other browsers.

If you need to use your existing browser, it is necessary to know which one your using before we can help you configure it properly to let you view mpegs.

Mac's work a bit differntly in this aspect than a PC jdboca. I believe in windows internet explorer, when you click a movie, you have the option to save to disk, or to open. When you click open, it just saves it in a temporary place and then opens it with the appropreate application. On the Mac you will have to 'save' the file and then open it. Browsers will do this for you however by setting them to look at the extention of the file. If the video is supported by Quicktime and you have the browser plug-in then you can view it directly in the browser.

Depends on what you mean by simple MPEG; is it 1 or 2" You must buy MPEG2 add on from Apple to Quicktime in order to play MPEG2.
