Hi,
I'm wondering where the sensor/magnet is located on the lid and the base of the laptop on the current 867/1ghz Ti powerbooks.
Or is there any other way to trick the laptop in thinking the lid is closed so I can start it up without opening and closing the lid everytime.
Was there every a feature in OS 9 where you could just turn off the powerbooks display and just run it off the external display without having to put the system to sleep and waking it up with the lid closed?
I don't think my hinge is going to last very long!

My guess would be that the magnet is in the right palmrest, but I'm not positive about the Tibooks. But just take a paper clip and run it around the palm rest and it should stick at some point. There's your magnet. You could probably put another magnet on the corresponding sensor in the screen to trick the machine into thinking it was closed.
As for your other question, you want to start it up in clamshell mode but with the lid open, is that it? First of all, I would suggest using monitor spanning mode -- I find it much more useful to have two monitors than to use one screen with the powerbook closed. But if you have to, you can try what I explained above.

Thanks, for your prompt reply!
I don't like monitor spanning as it will wear out the life of the backlight of my powerbook screen. At home it's used as a desktop replacement with my 21" so I don't have much of a need for another screen.
update: I've been trying around laptop but still no luck. Anyone know where it definately is with out the guess work?

The sensor is under the trackpad, slightly to the left side.
If you take a *somewhat* strong magnet (it has to be stronger than your weak refrigerator magnets) but not too strong (i.e., don't use some special neodymium thing) and place it on the left portion of the trackpad, the machine will think it is closed.

I personally don't see the point in clamshell mode (using both screens seems much more useful to me) but if heat is a concern you can put the powerbook to sleep, wake it with the external keyboard or mouse and then open the screen and still be using only the external screen.
i'll check for myself tomorrow morning when my powerbook shows up

I wouldnīt try that since the HD is also located under the trackpad and HD-stored date can easily been screwed up using strong magnets. And also: I donīt believe that the sensor is under the trackpad, maybe you simply got the paperclip stuck to some magnetic field of the HD motor.
