Did the new iBooks solve the problem that first generation iBooks suffer from with the frigging backlight going out? I am contemplating upgrading to a new iBook, but hell will freeze over before I buy another laptop with a busted backlight a year after I bought it.

I have the original 500mhz DUAL USB iBook, and my screen has been working perfectly for 2 years...

you are certainly blessed, or never close your iBook's lid.

I close the lid about 5 to 10 times a day.

I really don't think this problem was that much spread... a few cases only... I've never heard about this problem before... (and... I'm not blessed I do have the 'creaky hinge problem...)

I had the creaky hinge, but got that fixed under warranty. The backlight problem is widespread. Just check out all the threads on Apple Discussions. It's ridiculous.

So, boys and girls, the lesson to be learned from this thread is "Never buy Rev A Apple Hardware unless absolutely necessary." Let them work out the design bugs that will popup, then buy

I think the lesson is a different one: Always buy AppleCare! Sure, my Rev.A iBook (Dual USB) developed the backlight problem after 15 months, after my warranty had expired. However, I've read about people with creased backlight cables on many subsequent iBook revisions.

Once I paid $300, Apple fixed my backlight cable in a few short days. If I had bought AppleCare, they would have fixed it at the same speed for free. IMO, with Apple's $300 flat fee for repairs, it only takes one problem to make back the price of AppleCare. If you're so blessed as to avoid any problems, the three-year piece of mind is still worth it.

I've said it many times before: Never again will I buy an iBook or PowerBook without AppleCare.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Not w/o a lot of money (for those that don't have applecare) or some paperclip hack (can't find the link right now).
