I've sent my iBook 500/cd-rw in for repair 4 times already.

The most nagging problem has been my CD-RW drive. My machine was a custom configured machine because it has a serial number of combo machine. So I've had problems over last year and a half.

I've got applecare, and so far its saved my butt the last repair (my hard drive died) which was past the original warranty.

But now the CD-RW is acting up once more. And I'm afraid its going to have to end up as my 5th repair (4th for my CD-RW)...

I mean this is absurd that they couldn't fix the problem last february when it all started. Now its May 2003, and I might have to part with my iBook one more time knowing it might not be fixed completely.

So... now the big question... could Apple possibly give me a new iBook?

I've heard it has been done. Besides a few stories, people getting new machines (sometimes a newer model than the one they purchased)

I dont want to get my hopes up, it seems apple has become a little more uptight about repairs recently. The few sucess stories I've heard are at least a year or two old.

But if you look at 3 consecutive CD-RW replacements, and lets say each time it costs them $100 for a new drive, and maybe a couple more for a new bezel. $300 already. Then my most recent repair, they replaced my hard drive and logic board (about maybe $700 total), that's getting awful close to a new machine.

How much more money is apple willing to spend on a problem they've gotta realize they can't fix thoroughly?

(please indulge me with your sucess or failure stories at getting apple to do this. Lemme know when it happened too, the more recent the better)

Why don't you just ask Apple? Complain a bit, tell them how much money the down time has cost you, etc. etc., and then ask for a replacement computer. The worst that can happen is they'll say no, you have nothing to lose!
