I post this here too since there has been no reply in the games section.

I have tried Return to Castle Wolfenstein in a 12" powerbook. Although the game runs nicely in that machine, I noticed some peculiar behaviour. In some places (in and outdoor), looking at a certain direction causes a major frame drop. In this case, the frames fall to the 12-16fps level while the game usually runs between 25 and 45fps (sometimes I get 60-80fps). What is more strange, is that tweaking the settings has not apparent effect, as the fps in the whole settings range (from the lower than recommended to the highest ones) are the same. Changing the resolution also has no effect. The system has 640MB of RAM and 340MB are allocated to RtCW, while the Wolfenstein SP's version is 1.33.

Has anyone experienced this behaviour in wolfenstein? And is there something one can do (for example manually in the configuration file)?

This can happen in 3d games, I have seen this happen ut2k3, there is one dm map that you can look at the floor in a tunnel with no other players around and the frame rate drops like a stone (90fps > 15fps). It is not the PB it is a problem with either the game programming or the map itself, maybe the texture or perhaps a leak?

I have'nt noticed it in rtcw before, but I doubt any amount of tweaking will help.

Not very helpful but at least you know the PB is not really at fault

Thanks, I had the impression that it has to do with some kind of "bug", not probably in the common sense but something similar. I have had a noticeable increase in fps when I updated Wolfenstein from 1.1 to 1.33, so I think this update corrected in part similar problems.

i consistently get 150fps+ at 1280x1024 with all graphics settings turned up on my pc, havent tried running it on my tibook yet.

depends on whats being rendered on the screen, the more crazy stuff going on the lower fps. try screwing around with your settings.

Yeah, and you have to consider what is beyond the wall or obstruction you are looking at, if there is a lot, and its a long ways of lot it will slow it down. Specialy if any bit of it is showing, or if its near to be showing.

Sorry for the bad grammer
