sigh

My pismo 500's hd died. but this time i can't recover it.

I pop in OSX install cd,
under file, i got the disk utility
It sees the drive but can't mount, so, i went to initialize it
it starts up and after about 30 secs, the disk utility quits, and the disk is still dead.

next i tried to pop in the os9 disk, used the disk utility and again it can't initialize

in between i've tried norton and techtool but neither can even "see" the drive

Any help? Or is is it really dead?

I don't need anything off the drive, just recover

thanks

there's always tekserve, or the mac place on 10th street off of broadway (i think, can't remember at the moment...check the phone book, or ads in the village voice)...

2nd time? u can get a new harddrive really cheap these days, try otherworldcomputing, for example.

good luck!

just a followup:

In tried hard disk toolkit and was surprised when it could "see" the damaged disk.

I initialized it and it reported that there is indeed something bad about the disk...well at least i know

Here's a question: should i get an internal drive or is it ok to buy an external firewire drive?

thanks for the support!

Um, yeah. You can really get into this lawsuit mentality if you try. Everyone join in - it's fun!

I don't like Toshiba hard drives myself. The new 80 GB IBM/Hitachi TravelStar is available now for about $300 from TransIntl (based here in Orange County, CA.) I've heard that the performance is great, and it is a perfect fit for a Pismo. I have a 40GN right now, and am considering an 80 to replace it. Definitely something to look at.

so I bought a new hd fro owc...a 20gm IBM/Hitachi TravelStar, good enough for now and in my budget...

so i installed it, and using hard disk toolkit, I initialized it and then mounted it....( i am booting off an external firewire drive)

Then as a test, I Special--> erase disk

did it and I see the new drive on the desktop. fine...

I am placing the pismo on a bottomless short platform...(only a frame) for ventilation...

However, the internal fans have been on continuously...it hasn't "slept" yet

any help? thanks
