hey all
I'm thinking about getting an airport card and base station for my Pismo, and just got a few wee questions. Am I right in thinking that the pismo is airport ready and all I need is the standard airport card? The Applestore has the 2 types for sale, Airport and Airport Extreme, so the non-extreme one they're selling will do me fine? Then, all I have to do is get the Airport Extreme basestation and I'm up and away?
cheers for any help

forgot to say, but I live in Scotland and am moving to Australia in a few months, will there be any problems with the base station from here working over there such as the built in modem, although i'll probably be using DSL, just curious to know if there'll be any probs.

for the pismo, the regular airport is the way to go.
u might check the resellers, macmall etc.
i got an open-box airport card for around $50. U.S.
and the netgear mr814 is a great alternative to the aiport base station, also around $50.
(try buy.com, for example)
not sure about australian electricity, tho...check that out first!

If you are going to get an extreme base station & use DSL, get the extreme card or you will be slowed to 11mbps

It doesn't seem that the Airport Extreme card will work in the Pismo, only the regular Airport works in the Pismo...or am I wrong??

AU electricity is 240 V, but we have a different plug to the UK plug. Either you can use a straight plug adaptor, or fight with Apple Aus to sell you an Airport power adaptor.
You know what I'd do? I'd wait till you get out here to get it. That way, if there are any problems with warranty, you can sort them. If you buy it in Scotland, odds are that Apple Australia won't want to know you if something goes wrong out here.
Anyway, good luck with the decision

The Pismo uses the original Airport card. The above poster suggesting DSL and Airport Extreme is mistaken.
I owned my beloved Pismo for two years and I installed an Airport card. Installing the card into the Pismo is a snap. Just lift the keyboard, remove (with screwdriver) the cover over the RAM, and plug in the card. Less than three minutes of labour.
Go for it.
As for the base station, I don't know what to say regarding your intra-planetary move. I've had great success with Linksys Wireless Access Points, but I don't know about your situation.
Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of Wi-Fi.
Cheers!

Tganks everyone for the posts, it helps alot. It soundslike I'm probably better off waiting till I get to australia before getting the base station, but then again, maybe using an adaptor for the plug might do the trick, I'll check it out. Seems like a good time for the pismo, just heard about the 900mhz cpu update for it too.
Thanks again everyone, putting some life into the old machine is paying off tons, upgraded the memory to 768mb and got an IBM 40gig HD too, it feels liek a different beast, X just flies on it now. Can't wait to be wireless.
