My wife was wanting to purchase a 15" PB and I told her to check out Apples discount for teachers since she is one. We were both kinda surprised to find that you only get a $150.00 discount? Doesn't seem kinda weak for something they are bloating about promoting???

Yeah, it kinda does! However, the education for individual prices are higher than the institutional prices. If she can get it ordered with a PO from the institution the discount should be more substantial.
The reason for this is, of course, simple. All you need to do is SAY you are a student/educator to get the discount. I would bet that a large fraction of Apple's orders go to "education individuals" regardless of what the machine will be used for.

Well it's a little more difficult than that. You have to have your school registered by apple and you also have to have the product shipped to your school. But I hear you. I don't think her school would allow that since it's a personal item. But hey, $150 is better than nothing I guess.

Yeah, the EDU Discount is rediculous, escp. when you consider you'll have to pay sales tax, thus it basically cancels out the discount. Your best bet is to see if see can purchase it directly through the school for an "Institutional" price, or purchase it through an online Mac reseller with some nice rebates/bundles and no sales tax.

I bought my 12" PB through my university bookstore and saved $300. But then I sank that $300 right back into it by maxing out the RAM, bumping the hard drive, and adding an Airport card. Oh well, I guess it's more like getting the extra stuff for free.
It was done as an institutional order, though. I checked at the Apple Store and if I had ordered through them, I would have save only $100.

My mom is a junior high teacher. Every year her school has a computer buy through Apple, where faculty members can purchase at Apple's institution prices, and have the price taken out of their paychecks over the course of a year, interest and tax free. I placed an order for my 1GHz TiBook in May, and my new baby arrived Friday afternoon
Some colleges offer bigger discounts through their bookstores, but a 1GHz Ti SD ($2499 base, changed to 1 512MB SDRAM dimm for $90), AE base w/o antennae ($179) and AppleCare ($239) for a total of $3007 is still a pretty damn good deal, especially once you throw in the interest and tax-free aspect of the deal.
