I registered for this forum in marchish...at that time I was reading (more than a couple of times a day) dozens and dozens of posts by soon to be 17" owners...mostly about shipping and speculation. Now since I have my new powerbook, I don't check quite as often. It must be the same case with everyone else too because the rate of posting has gone WAY down! I think that's GREAT!! It must mean that mostly everyone's laptop is working great and having few to no problems so far?! (other than the few strange noises, which I think most of us are hearing...but no performance issues).

I've settled into the switch just fine and can't wait to start using my machine for productivity.

Great job apple

I too have noticed... and agree with your analysis... the PB17s are a success....

You're right, it is getting quite quiet around here lately...

Although from what I have seen there is usually a cycle for these things...

When a product is announced there are usually posts in approximately this order;

'Wow... Got to have one',
'Ordered one!',
'It's Cool',
'It's lame',
'Fault Thread',
'What case should I get'
'Applecare sucks!'
'Should I get One?'
'When is the next Revision coming?'
'Apple is so rubbish I'm off to buy a PC unless they release quad Power4 iBooks this week '

Then, when we have all nearly lost the will to live, ...

We get another model (!!) and the whole thing starts again! I guess it is just nature, and you'd be mad to get in the way!!

The Powermac forum is dead at the moment... at the end of the cycle, but wait for the infusion when the 970 hits!...

Peace,

Marc

Got our PB17 in late April... within two days, developed 13 stuck pixels. Mac Connection sent a replacement, no problems with it whatsoever.

Ordered two iCurves, one shows up defective -- one side taller than the other.

I'm batting .500! I must be a magnet for defective merchandise! Even with that, my switch has been worth it.

Let's not forget all the people that spent so much time insisting we would all be whinging about chronic problems with our "rev A" 17" beasts. Seems those dictators have all gone quiet.

Except, of course, for John "cannot-keep-his-mouth-shut" Manzione...

you know people.....

having not been on the mac scene since my Performa 630CD (which, by the way, cost as much back then as my PB17 does now), I can't say whether rev A's of previous PBs were predicted to suck. I'll take your word for it... but I would surely say that based on the overwhelming success regarding the 17" PB, it is probably the most successful RevA ever.

Kinda make you think.... where will the PB17 be in 2-3 years when our AppleCares run out? could be real exciting stuff.... and there won't be a big huey about the Revisions. But still... the PB17 will be a fantastic machine then, maybe not as much as we go ga-ga for it now, but it holds a special place in our hearts----certainly holds a special place for us switchers... mine sits where my PC used to be.

It is good that we dont hear more of those "wait for RevB" threads.... I love RevA PB17.... If i wsa gauranteed RevB in August... would I have waited??? Tough to say, but I've been enjoying my PB17 very VERY much, and I doubt 20GB and 200-400mhz more speed would change that.

Keep in mind also that the overall percentage of PowerBooks out there that are 17" models is very small, compared to 15" and 12" units. If memory serves me correctly, Apple stated that it shipped 14,000 17" units for the previous quarter.

My question is not so much about quality, it seems the units are solid, but about long-term sales. Now that the initial 'glut' is sold through, what will sales of this model be like?

My reaction is that the 17", as currently priced, is the typical Apple 'vanity product' that will need a significant performance boost and/or price cut in the near future to maintain profitable sales.
