i'm looking for some help.
i'm really thinking about getting an iPod soon, but over half of my music collection is on mini-disc. although my stereo has an optical jack, i'm not aware of any means of running out to my computer.
does anyone know of some sort of optical-converter or another way to get my mini-disc music into my computer?
thanks for any help!

Welcome to the MacNN Forums!
First off, how'd you get your music onto mini-disc, surely you didn't purchase mini-discs w/ music already on them? If you purchased them on CD first, just rip all the CD's to the hard drive. However, if all you have it the music on mini-disc, maybe this article could help: Click Here

Nonsense.
There are also tons of prosumer and professional audio PCI cards and external interfaces (both USB and FireWire) that have optical and coaxial digital ("S/PDIF") inputs.
The perfect one for you is probably the Edirol UA-1D or something just like it.

For some reason, I think I remember seeing a USB audio interface thingy at the Apple Retail stores that may take S/PDIF inputs. Even if it doesn't, the Edirol that tooki mentioned should do the trick for you.
I remember my MD, back in the day. It was cool, but nowhere near as cool or convenient as an iPod. I don't have one yet, as Apple hasn't shipped my 30 gig yet (grr.) Sure, I can't do a line in on an iPod, but it'll hold a lot more and I don't have to buy discs for it.
