I've owned all three of the current Powerbook models (long story.)
The 12" (at least the one I had) has a very poor vertical range, I spent all my time making minute adjustments to screen angle to keep the colors looking good.
The 15" was pretty nice, but it had a bit of a yellowish cast to it in my opinion. The vertical angle was much improved over the 12" though.
The 17" is near perfect. As much vertical viewing range as the 15", and possibly a bit more horizontal range. Not quite as bright, nor as much horizontal angle ability as my Samsung 191T (haven't seen a laptop that is as good..) but better than any other laptop I have used.

I had a look at a 17" in a shop here in London and was glad to go back to my TiSD. The resolution on the 17" would have been great (I'm one of those who'd like 1600x1024 on my Ti...) but my own 15" seemed brighter to me. This was from memory, though, so grains of salt all round.
My previous Ti's, though (a 400 and a 550) were much, much worse than either display. They were dim in comparison.

I came to the same conclusion. I've had my Ti 867 for four months now and I'm still impressed by how bright the screen is. Of course I didn't see the 17" side-by-side, but I don't remember thinking it was any brighter.
But, as you say, more pixels are always welcome

My dad has a 1Ghz TiBook and I have the 17". After seeing the two side by side, I have to prefer my display. In fact, I have people coming up to me all the time saying that they would ditch their PC for a 17" after seeing this thing. Of course, I don't blame them. But even my dad, being an engineer, would love to be able to use the extra screen space of the 17".

You are correct. The 15" 1GHz screen is brighter than the 17".
