Is there any way without going to a repair shop to test a powerbook modem. I have tried various phone jacks, line and services. The modem worked until two days ago. Now it begins the dialing process (no audible dial tone, which I had before), and then stops. No clicking from the modem, just a faint whine/hiss. I have not downloaded or upgraded in since 10.2.5 was released. I have tried all of KB tips, and AOL and Earthlink tips. It is 10 months old, I have backed everything up, I just would like to know if there is any way to check the hardware withour taking it to a shop.

Try it somewhere besides your home if you haven't already. Also a reformat may probably be suggested by Apple before they let you send it in. Just a guess.

Two things that you've probably already done and they're very obvious but make sure you're plugging into the phone jack and not the ethernet (had a secretary do that once) and secondly make sure you go into System Prefs and to "Network" and then into "Network Port Configurations" and make sure that the "Internal Modem" box is checked and the other two (Airport and Ethernet) are UNchecked and move the "Internal Modem" to the top of the list, then "Apply Now."

Good luck.

A friend of mine had his modem on a PB 667 go out unexplainedly. He sent it back to Apple and they fixed it.

Apple uses cheap modems, IMO.

I tried all the above many times and many places and many cords. Fortunately, the ethernet still works. After a complete reinstall of all software and all updates from Apple and two service providers... nothing. I guess it's time to visit a Service Cener.
